Martin Reichenthal Obituary

REICHENTHAL

Martin

Martin Reichenthal was born November 18, 1937, in Rock Island, Illinois. He died May 7, 2015, in Toledo, Ohio.

Marty was the heart and soul of a group of people in Toledo that evolved for more than 20 years. Prior to that, he was the hub of creative communities in New York City, the Catskills, Spain, Ibiza and London. Marty was the oldest cousin and only boy in his loving family. He was larger than life. As an artist, he had a quality that brought together so many people.

He worked for American Express, AP, UPI, The Toledo Blade and Western Electric Co. and various cruise-line travel companies. He set up the Western Electric Pavilion at the Worlds Fair in New York City. As a freelance photographer in the 1960s and '70s, he shot amazing photos of prominent authors , musicians, comedians, and actors including Vincent Price, Henry Fonda, Diana Ross, Tennessee Williams, Frank Zappa and many others. An iconic shot of Mikhail Baryshnikov in midair is one of his most recognized pieces.

He was a trusted friend and a talented artist. It is hard to imagine the world without him. He is survived by his cousins, Claire Kirsner, Sherry Bame, Linda Shyavitz and Nancy Holczer, too many friends to name, and two dogs and a cat as a surrogate father!

I am forever thankful to Marty for noticing my photography in the late 1990's and for helping me with Photoshop and digital printing. The lengthy conversations with him were most interesting and enjoyable. I am happy to submit two of my favorite shots I took of him (and which met his critical approval). Truly a one of a kind person.
