Michael Sopkovich Obituary

Michael Sopkovich

May 6, 1958 - June 14, 2024

Michael Andrew Sopkovich passed away on June 14th, 2024 in Perrysburg, Ohio, after an abrupt and brief battle with cancer at 66 years old. Mike was born in Youngstown, Ohio, an alumnus of Austintown Fitch and the College of Wooster, and he raised his family in Perrysburg, Ohio for the last 40 years. He worked for the State of Ohio as a Licensing Specialist, as well as a proud small business owner of Northwest Beacon. In his free time, Mike was well-known for being a pizza enthusiast, a collector of vinyl records and CDs, cheering on Ohio sports teams (especially the Guardians), enjoying Wordle puzzles and poker games, cycling around Northwest Ohio, spending weekends with his grandsons, and being an amazing cook. His family will deeply miss his famous biscuits and gravy, sloppy joes, chili, and stuffed peppers. He loved the family pets and they always loved him the most. Mike also loved the empathy he received for raising four daughters.

Mike is survived by his wife of 39 years, Alyce Sopkovich; his four beautiful daughters, Emily (Scot) Burbacher, Rachel (Ricky Poland) Sopkovich, Liz (Scott Balzer) Sopkovich, and Rose (Mina Tanios) Sopkovich; and three grandsons, Lennon and Beckett Burbacher, and Ryker Poland. Mike is also survived by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Brown; his siblings, Mari Lynn (Rob) Koblenzer, Bobby (Carla) Brown, and Barb (Chris) Swope; as well as his aunt and Godmother, Helen Philibin; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Michael Leonard Sopkovich; his brother, James Sopkovich; and his niece, Megan.

Thanks to valiant efforts by the doctors, nurses, and staff at the OSU James Cancer Center and the care provided by the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, where he passed peacefully with his wife by his side.

A memorial mass will be held for Mike on Saturday, June 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, 356 S. Belle Vista Ave. Youngstown, Ohio 44509. Memorial contributions can be made to Nature's Nursery (Whitehouse, Ohio) and Pelotonia.

Alyce- Just found out via the Wooster mag of Michael´s passing. Words cannot express my sadness and sympathy. Both of you were significant people in my college life. Michael and I spent the summer of `78 seeking our fortunes in Phoenix. While we were not very successful, we had fun and learned a lot. I will miss him and his wit. With prayers. Drew Leander
