Nancy Whitmer Obituary

Nancy B. Whitmer

Nancy B. Whitmer was born on April 6, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio and died September 8, 2021 of Motor Neuron Disease in Wilsonville, Oregon, where she had lived since 2005.

Nancy graduated from Maumee High School in 1960. She attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and graduated in 1964.

In the early 1960s she worked in Washington D.C. as a translator and spent 2 years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo teaching English and French. In 1970 she earned a Masters of Arts degree in French from Middlebury College, Vermont; in 1973, a Masters in Library Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI; and in 1984, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.

Nancy spent the rest of her career as a Law Librarian, first at the University of Pennsylvania Law Library in Philadelphia, and then at the State of Michigan Law Library in Lansing, MI. She retired in 2004 and moved to the Portland, OR area in 2005.

Nancy had a lifelong interest in sports and athletics, language and politics. While in Michigan, she enjoyed outdoor activities like cross country skiing and biking; and loved the nature and history of the Pacific Northwest. We had many a lively discussion about the state of the world and the U.S. politically and socially. She loved election time and was an avid fan of C Span, political opinion shows and

political and social history books. In her youth she had been quite athletic, playing tennis and softball. In her later years she enjoyed watching sports such as tennis, baseball and college football on TV.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents; and her brother, Robert Whitmer of Decatur, Illinois. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Whitmer; her sister-in-law, Karol Whitmer; and her nieces, Brook Stewart and Bridget Whitmer.

Per her request, there will be no memorial service. Donations can be made to the

ACLU or the Lymphoma Society.
