Neil Saunders Obituary

SAUNDERS
Neil DPM
Neil Saunders, devoted husband and father, podiatrist, and adventure seeker, died on Monday, October 3, 2016. He suffered from many medical issues in the past few years; most significantly back surgeries complicated by infection.
He was raised with his three sisters, Suellen, Kim, and Robin, in a loving home in the Cleveland area. His parents, Ivan and Nanci, were so proud of the successful doctor and family man he had become. Being the youngest child, his sisters had great fun dressing him up, making funny songs to tease him, and bossing him around.
After graduation from Beachwood High School, he lived on a Kibbutz in Israel, and also led a high school tour there in 1984.
He was proud of his degree from The Ohio State University, where he met and fell in love with Lynne, who would become his wife for 29 years. He went on to Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. His wardrobe told the story of his heart: Saturday was for an OSU Buckeye sweatshirt, Sunday a Cleveland Browns sweatshirt, and surgical scrubs for every other day.
Neil lived a high-octane life. His eyes lit-up describing his first motorcycle, and the Harley he bought later in life was his real baby. He took up SCUBA diving and had dream vacations exploring the oceans around the world. He loved sharing his passion with his son, Noah. Neil's last trip was to Palau with him. His retirement dream was that he would be with Lynne, underwater and holding hands, exploring a reef.
He loved Podiatry and his patients. He treated them like his family and they cooked for him like he was theirs. Cookies, brownies, and other foil-covered treats filled his office. The women running his office worked so hard to keep up with his large patient load and try to rein-in his joke-telling and over-sharing. He relished his role as teacher as he participated in the training of the podiatry residents. He was devoted to them and they were in turn his biggest cheerleaders and supporters when he was struggling with his health.
Raised Jewish, his friendship with mentor Pastor Marilynn Schroeder, and the teachings of AA, led him to become a Christian. He was baptized at Epworth United Methodist Church with his daughter, Isabel. His faith was a deep part of his life. Neil made many a friend through his AA affiliations and church family.
His greatest joy was his family. He wanted no more than to enjoy being with Lynne and their three children, Benjamin, Noah, and Isabel. He was so proud of his kids, and was always working to be the best father to them.
His last days found him atop his leather recliner, living vicariously through the exploits of his literary heroes like Dirk Pitt. He mourned the loss of his thrill-seeking abilities. His ravaged body is gone now. His spirit can be found in the roar of motorcycles enjoying the first warm day of March, or the lap of the ocean as it meets the sand.
A gathering to celebrate the life of Dr. Neil will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Stone Oak Country Club in the club house.
The family suggests tributes in the form of shoes to St. Pauls Community Center, 230 13th Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604.

Lynne, Ben, Noah & Isabel,
I want to extend to you my very deepest sympathy along with my heartfelt prayers during these difficult days. I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Neil's passing. He was such a wonderful friend and doctor. We saw him often over at least 12 years as my husband Larry had so much difficulty with his feet and legs because of diabetes. We knew that Dr Neil did everything he could and more to save both of his feet. We also prayed for him and I am so thrilled to know that he came to Christ. He and Larry will be cheering for the Bucks from the best seat in the Shoe. Thank you for sharing him with us. With love and prayers, Beth Shanabrook & Lorena

My heart felt condolences to the Saunders family. Dr. Saunders had a great gift of relating and making others feel like they weren't alone in this world. During many of my appointments I was humbled by his openness about who he was, he shared stories of struggle and triumph. He was never quick to judge, listened with an open heart and was genuinely interested in who his patients were as people. He didn't just fix my foot, many times he fixed my fears. My heart breaks for the people who knew him and those who didn't get the honor. He made this world a better place and will truly be missed.

Lynn:

I just returned from North Carolina and happened to open a letter for my son and found out this had happened. I know no words can take away the pain but I hope it provides some comfort knowing that Neil helped me tremendously as well as numerous others. I will miss him and it is unfortunate that this happened the day before I returned to Toledo.

My heartfelt condolences to the Saunders family. I have worked with Dr. Saunders for ten years at St. Anne. He and I established the first Department of Podiatry at any hospital in northwest Ohio and he was the first Chairman. I had the utmost admiration for his clinical skills and tireless dedication to his profession. My heart breaks at the thought of all the suffering he endured. May God grant you peace, my friend. You will be sorely missed.

Treated my husband and talked about fishing with Dr Saunders. Always the adventurer, he ended up going fishing on Lake Erie with his son Noah in my husband's boat. Doctors are respected. This doctor was truly loved. He will be missed.

Dr. Neil took care of me for years. His kindness and dedication was welcoming. My most fond memory is when we would say a quick prayer for one another after he'd clip my nails.
I suffer the same back condition as he did. After his first back surgery he told me to never have back surgery.
He was not only my Podiatrist he was my friend/a sounding board and my Brother in Christ.
Rest Easy Doc. That ultimate healing we use to talk about has come over you and the pain is finally gone.

It just seems like yesterday Neil and I were talking about his fish tank and he was showing me pictures on his phone of how good it was looking. I think he was living vicariously through his fish tank since he was not able to scuba recently with all of his back problems. Even when he was in pain and struggling with just walking, he still made every effort to take care of his patients and attend committee meetings where he served at St. Anne's Hospital. I will miss him as a respected colleague and friend.

Lynne,
Dan and I were so disheartened when we heard of Neil's passing forward. Neil was such a wonderful and caring man who did not deserve such suffering in his life!!
The Lord has taken his pain away and We envision him riding his Harley on a perfect day and scuba diving in the most beautiful ocean... Neil is free of his earthly problems. We are praying for comfort and peace for you and your family as you grieve.

As I read Dr. Saunders obituary many thoughts passed through my mind. I have fond memories of Dr. Saunders. I remember my sitting in the chair and he and I talked about motorcycles as he worked his magic. I remember on one occasion he got up to leave and I asked him if he was going to complete the procedure and he said simply, all done. I remember being at the funeral home during my wife's passing and looking up to see him walking towards me. I could go on and on. I consider Neil Saunders as being more than just my Doctor, he will forever be my friend.

October 6, 2016

To Lynne & kids, so sorry about Neil. I owe him my life; in 2007 when I was in the ICU, he was the only doctor that correctly diagnosed me and saved my life. I've always been grateful
