Oliver Todd Obituary

Oliver E. Todd, Jr.

Oliver E. Todd, Jr. recently passed away at his home in Charlevoix, Michigan. He was a successful intellectual property law attorney in Toledo for almost 50 years. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in electrical engineering, he attended the George Washington University College of Law. During law school, he worked as a patent examiner in the U.S. Patent Office. Following graduation, Oliver returned to Toledo and joined the intellectual property law firm of Owen, Purdue, Barker & Emch (eventually known as Emch, Schaffer, Schaub & Todd). One of his longtime clients, the Champion Spark Plug Company, convinced Oliver to join the company as its Chief Patent Counsel. When that company was subsequently sold, Oliver returned to the private practice of intellectual property law at the Toledo law firm of MacMillan, Sobanski & Todd. After more than 20 years at that firm, he gradually transitioned into retirement in his beloved northern lower Michigan.

I worked with Oliver in the Legal Department at Champion. It was clear that he was an outstanding intellectual property attorney and did great work for the Company. His knowledge of things went well beyond patent and trademark law. I think he would have done very well on Jeopardy. He also had many friends at Champion who liked and admired him and his great sense of humor. My sincere condolences to his famaily.
