Paul Mettes Obituary

Paul W. Mettes

07/15/1941 - 12/04/2024

Paul W. Mettes was born in humble surroundings in south Toledo, Ohio on July 15, 1941 and died in the early morning hours of December 4, 2024 following a long life lived "spectacularly."

A caddy at The Toledo Country Club, Paul went on to stock shelves at the A&P grocery in south Toledo while he attended St. Francis de Sales High School. After his service in the Army he became a Toledo Firefighter for his entire career. Paul stated that his greatest accomplishment was marrying Ruth Maag in 1963. With Ruth he raised a daughter and two sons and doted on his five grandchildren.

Although Paul never lived more than four miles from the house where he was born, he was an intrepid global journeyer traveling widely throughout South America, Europe, North America and Asia during his retirement.

Over the decades Paul pursued husband/fatherhood with an unrivalled commitment. He was a steadfast fireman, an unwavering friend to those he held close and a man of honor, dignity dependability, integrity and love.

Even in death his indefatigable spirit lived on. Paul's body was immediately transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center where he donated himself to the medical college for research and the further advancement of medical care for the living.

Circumstances denied Paul the opportunity to say goodbye to those he held dear.

But, he would have said thank you to all his family and friends that made his life exceptional and well lived. Paul's memory will remain in the hearts of those who were honored to have the privilege of knowing him. This good man's legacy will continue.

Please accept the sympathy and prayer of the family of St. Francis de Sales School from which Paul graduated in 1959. We believe the motto, "Once a Knight always a Knight" and so we shall continue to remember Paul. Beginning in the Autumn of 2025 we shall remember him at our Annual Mass for Deceased Alumni, Faculty, and Staff celebrated in the school chapel on the Sunday nearest November 1, All Saints' Day. Family will be invited.

Condolences to Mettes family. Paul was a firefighter friend of my Dad's and cut our hair from time we were boys to time we were men. We went to SJJ and so did his sons . He was a great guy we all liked. I can say I have not seen him in many, many years but my brother Mike did. Mr. Mettes was a great listener and a great talker. He was not shy with sharing his opinions on a few matters and more than once he helped me a lot with how to look at a situation in life. I will say a prayer for him tonight. he was a great guy.

Paul was a man larger than life. He was one of the fist people we met at our condo when we moved in. He was knowledgeable about almost everything at the condos and was the first to lend a hand. As he sat outside smoking one of his cigars, he would regale us with on of his many stories. He will be missed by all who knew him here, especially
