Richard "Rick" Emery
Richard "Rick" L. Emery unexpectedly passed away at The Toledo Hospital on July 15, 2024, at the age of 60.
Rick was born on July 14, 1964, in Marion, OH, to Leroy and Violet Emery. He graduated from Pleasant High School in 1982 and married his high school sweetheart, Kim Roberts, in 1991.
Rick graduated from Ohio Northern University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in Education in 1986. From the University of Toledo College of Law, he earned a Juris Doctor in 1991 and was admitted to The Supreme Court of Ohio on November 18, 1991.
Rick was a partner at Shindler, Neff, Holmes, Schlageter & Mohler, LLP, while teaching business law at Lourdes University from 1992-2015. For the past 9 years, he was a partner with Martin J. Holmes, Jr. at Holmes & Emery, LLP, practicing personal injury, real estate and probate law. Rick didn't see this as just a job, the Holmes family was his family. Over the years they built a true friendship. In 2018, Rick received an award from the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys as one of the Top 10 Best Attorneys in Ohio.
Rick was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds fan. He loved watching games and sharing sports commentaries with his son, A. Chris. If Rick was not watching a game, you could find him reading. Rick appreciated learning and sharing new information. Every Thursday and on weekends, he looked forward to golfing with a group of friends who over the years formed a "brotherhood" of friendship. When not golfing, reading, or watching a game, Rick would be found in the kitchen creating a delicious meal. Rick was a "foodie" to those who knew him best. He was passionate about finding new restaurants, foods, and recipes to share with friends and family. Rick had a special place in his heart for animals, especially his dogs; he loved them dearly and they always brought a smile to his face.
Rick and Kim loved to spend their time vacationing in Palmetto, FL. He prided himself in finding the freshest seafood and trying the new weekly flavor of ice cream at Detwiler's Farmers Market for dessert. He and Kim enjoyed traveling and relaxing with high school friends. Each summer, they would enjoy good conversations and make new memories as they traveled to different destinations.
Rick is survived by his wife, Kim; children, A. Chris and Sarah; sister, Valerie (Thomas) Gerlach; brothers-in-law, Edward Saad, Michael Roberts, and Steve Roberts; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Patricia Saad.
Rick leaves behind a legacy of generosity and kindness. The passion he had for his family was unwavering. They will never forget all of the special holidays, events, and memories that were shared. A friend to many, always willing to lend a hand to anyone. He was taken from us too soon and will dearly be missed.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 2nd, at 12pm at Marion Cemetery in Marion, Ohio. A celebration of Rick's life will be held on Sunday, August 4th, at Stone Oak Country Club, 100 Stone Oak Blvd, Holland, Ohio, from 11:30am - 2:00pm. A special tribute honoring his life will begin at 12:30pm.
