Richard Guyton Obituary

GUYTON

Richard C.

Richard "Dick or "Red" Caldwell Guyton, 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Toledo, Ohio on Sunday, August 31, 2014, with his family present. Born in Toledo July 23, 1928, to James and Josephine Guyton. He lived most of his life in the Toledo area.

Dick was proud of and is survived by his five children, Jeffrey (Jaekah) Guyton, Darcy (Jack) Hanna, Laurie (Dennis) Fasbinder, Lizabeth (Mike) Ales and Thomas (Ann) Guyton, who he raised with his first wife, Joanne Guyton-Simmons. Also left, to carry his legacy is grandchildren, Roxane Guyton-von Eck, Renee Hanna, Jennifer, Kelly and Adrienne Fasbinder, Moriah and Bryan Ales, and Alexis, Kara, T. Jacob, Charlie, and Oliver Guyton. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Robert Guyton and sister, Jeanne Galliers; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, James Guyton Jr.

Dick had fond memories of his high school years at Scott High School, where he was a gifted mulit-sport athlete. Long time coach, Dick Torio, once said of him, "He is the best natural athlete I have ever seen," and he had coached Olympic athletes. Dick was an active supporter of the drive to renovate Scott High School, rather than demolish that beautiful building. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a B.A. and M.A. in Education, then served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Dick was a loyal member of the Conn-Weissenberger American Legion Post for many years. He taught in the Sylvania Schools for more than 30 years during which he devoted himself to his "kids," as a vocational teacher and jobs coordinator, as well as a football and wrestling coach. He was great with students because he was an energetic, goofy guy who valued fairness and could whistle a tune or make up a song on any topic in minutes, and sing it with gusto in a beautiful singing voice. Dick also loved the outdoors, serving as the Township Parks Commissioner in Bedford for some years and planted on average one tree a week all his adult life.

A special thank you to loving home care aides, Ashleigh Morgan of Senior Helpers of Northwest Ohio and Dawn Lyell, and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their support and care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scottwood Community Garden in Dick's neighborhood in the Old West End Mansion View, 2035 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, Ohio 43604, or to Helping Hands of St. Louis Outreach Center, 443 Sixth Street Toledo, OH 43605.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, September 4 from 4:00-9:00 p.m. with an American Legion service at 7:30 p.m., and for a funeral service on Friday, September 5, at 1:00 p.m. at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main St., Sylvania, OH 43560, with the burial immediately following.
