Robert Selders Obituary

SELDERS Robert A. Sr. Robert A. Selders Sr., age 81, of Waterville, OH, passed away peacefully Monday morning, September 1, 2008, from complications following surgery for bladder and prostate cancer. He was born April 19, 1927 in Altoona, PA to Kenneth and Thelma (Ayers) Selders. A World War II Navy veteran, Bob served aboard the USS Savannah CL-42 in the Atlantic (1944-45) and aboard the USS Ault DD698 in the Pacific (1945), and was discharged in June 1946. Bob was a member of the American Legion Post #384, Whitehouse. He was a Lithographer for 32 years. The last 23 years as a scanner operator for S.F.C. Graphics, Inc, before retiring in 1992. Since 1994 Bob has been well known for his annual participation in the Bike-to-the-Bay for Multiple Sclerosis. He earned the honor of being one of the top fundraisers, a Golden Spokes Rider since 1996. This was the charity that was so close to Bob's heart. He spent many years riding and taking on as many sponsors as he could get to help raise money for a cause that he so dearly believed in. Team Selders, over the years, had raised over $60,000 in donations. Bob and his wife, Ida worked on their fundraising year round. When weather did not permit him to go on his daily 30-40 mile bike rides, he would ride his stationary bike inside to keep in shape, never wanting to miss the annual ride he so looked forward to. He had many followers and friends that he picked up along the way, all who loved and admired him. Bob was the father of nine children, four step-children, twenty-seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Ida Mae (Robinson); sons, Bob Jr. (Evie) of Grand Rapids, Jim of Waterville, Mark (Linda) of VanBuren, Tom (Peggy) of Avon Lake, Matthew of Perrysburg, Mike (Marsha) of Perrysburg; daughters, Karen (Wayne) Coryell of Grand Rapids, Deb Groover of Oregon, Margaret Jempson of Morriston, FL, and stepchildren, Debbie Selders of Whitehouse, Robin (Larry) Friesner of Sylvania, Tim (Brenda) Kinkaid of Mansfield, Kathy (Erin) Walls of McClure, and his newly adopted daughter, Lynn Ritter of Maumee, his Bike-to-the-Bay buddy for years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Irene Kennedy. He loved his wife and all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bob was a very strong man, yet gentle and caring. He will be very dearly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life and gathering for family and friends will be Thursday, September 4, 2008, from 5-7 p.m. at Peinert Funeral Home, 7220 Dutch Rd., Waterville, OH. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The family is also taking donations for a memorial bench in Bob's memory to be placed in Farnsworth Metro Park. The family would like to thank the University of Toledo Medial Center doctors and nurses, and all the staff for their loving care and support in the last few weeks of Bob's life. www.peinertfuneralhome.com

I would like to thank all who have had us in their thoughts and prayers and all that have sent us emails in the guest book. I can't begin to tell you how much it means to the whole family. I cry everytime I come in and read the wonderful, heartfelt writings about our Father. He has touched a lot of lives by the way he lived his life. I could only hope to leave a legacy such as my Dad's. I look in the eyes of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and I know Dad will live on in our hearts forever. We will be at the Bike to the Bay next year. You see, he left us with another legacy to continue. He will be there in spirit with the boys and grandchildren riding his bike, like he always loved to do. His MS family became a part of our family and we dearly love them all. To all who looked out for Dad on the ride, thank you. It was very much appreciated by all of us. He was a very special man. This is a very hard time for everyone. We have lost the man that quite honestly we thought would live forever. I am technically his step-daughter, but he has been a Father to me for 40 years. They don't make them any better than him. I, like everyone in the family loved him deeply and dearly. We will all be together this evening for his Celebration of Life. His bike, helmet, shirt and bike gloves will be there also. That's the way he would have wanted it. He's up there watching over us. We do miss him. Thank you for the entries, they really are very comforting.

Bob Selders was the sweetest, kindest, most determined person I've ever met. To say he looked forward each year to riding in Bike-to-the-Bay is an understatement. Every time he came in to the office, he always had a big smile when he'd tell us how far he rode that day or how much money he already raised. The ride for him was more than a challenge, it was a quest. He made a difference in many lives of those living with MS, and his memory will be in our hearts always. My deepest condolences to Ida and the Selders Family. God Bless all of you.

To the Selders Family.
It is seldom one of us finds a friend like the one my father found in Bob.
My Dad worked at SFC with Bob and he had nothing but the fondest of memories of the time he spent with Bob. They made quite a pair, and I am sure, still that way now.
May both of them rest in peace.

Mr. Selders was one of a kind- a unique individual whose understated view of himself was so charming and refreshing. He did not know the significant impact he had on us. His presence and participation in the MS Bike to the Bay is legendary and his spirit will live on. Thank you Mr. Selders and Family for your support of the Bike to the Bay and the MS Society. With calming thoughts and peaceful prayers to you and yours.

Mr. Selders and the MS Bike to the Bay go together like a hand in a glove. His drive and determination have inspired many. Year after year from volunteers, to riders, to employees people ask during Bike have you seen Mr. Selders? As an employee of the MS Society and as a person with MS, I greatly appreciate all Mr. Selders has done. A piece of our tour will be missing with him gone. Your families are in my prayers.

Mr. Selders was held in high esteem by everyone here at the MS Society and by our volunteers. He sometimes needed a SAG to get over the hills at Bike to the Bay and we watched over him as if he was our own. He told me that he was getting his sons involved to leave a legacy for the bike tour. I know they will ride on in his honor. We loved him very much for his cheerful can do attitude. He will be missed by one and all. All my prayers are with Ida and the family.
