Sheldon FRANKEL Obituary

FRANKEL
Sheldon
Sheldon Frankel of Toledo, OH passed away peacefully in his bed on April 19, 2016. Sheldon was 95 years old and surrounded by his family.
Sheldon was born in New York City on January 18, 1921 to Joseph and Evelyn (Karon) Frankel. Self-defined at an early age, Sheldon left home at 17 years old after attending Dewitt Clinton High School in NYC. His undergraduate and graduate education at The Ohio State University culminated in a doctorate in dentistry.
As a Captain and dental officer in the United States Army, Dr. Frankel followed Patton across Europe. He took pride in caring for both American and German soldiers equally for the 2½ years he served in Europe. A true patriot, Sheldon refused to buy any automobile or product that wasn't American made.
Sheldon originally founded Frankel Dentistry in 1945, and his patients were truly his best friends. He maintained some patients/friends for over 67 years, and their families and children are still patients of Frankel Dentistry today. Sheldon was always at the forefront of dentistry and was one of the first to implement any new technology introduced to the industry. He was one of the first practitioners to replace missing teeth with dental implants, and he was one of the first to use a high-speed hand piece and air abrasion system. To this day, his son Dr. Jon Frankel says that he has never seen such quality and perfection in dental work.
Dr. Frankel was a natural athlete. He was not only a great swimmer himself, but he taught many to swim at the Frankel home pool. A competitive player, he enjoyed all racquet sports, particularly tennis, squash and racquetball.
Above all else, Sheldon was a family man. He exemplified the ideal father and husband, and family was the focus of his happiness. From family holidays and travel to fishing and boating excursions, it was always family first. Once asked about his life, he replied, “I have no enemies and no enemies have me.” He was a man of impeccable virtue.
Sheldon Frankel did not merely study the Torah, he lived it. Sheldon Frankel was a life member of Congregations Etz Chayim and B'nai Israel.
Sheldon is survived by Ervine (Hening) Frankel, his wife of over 72 years; his children, Karen (and Bruce) Kearns, Rabbi Jerry (and Sheri) Frankel, Barbara (and Mark) Wexler and Dr. Jon (and Niki) Frankel. Dr. Frankel's love of family continues with 22 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
All services will take place on Thursday, April 21. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a graveside service at Beth Shalom Cemetery in Oregon, OH, followed by an 11:45 a.m. memorial service at Congregation B'nai Israel located at 6525 W Sylvania Ave, Sylvania, OH 43560. Lunch will follow at 12:30 p.m., next door at Temple Shomer Emunim. For one night only, family and friends are welcome to pay their respects from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the home of Jon and Niki Frankel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Congregation B'nai Israel, 6525 W Sylvania Ave., Sylvania, OH 43560 and the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 2500 North Reynolds Road Toledo, Ohio 43615.
