Stephen H. Wernert

Stephen H. Wernert, 68, of Toledo passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born in Toledo on August 2, 1950 to James and Rosemary Wernert.

Stephen attended Rosary Cathedral Grade School and St. Francis de Sales High School, graduating in 1968. He attended St. Meinrad Seminary for 2 years where he was a member of the basketball team. Stephen later went on to the University of Toledo where he received his BA Degree in 1976.

He worked as an orderly at St. Vincent's Medical Center while attending college and later worked at the 7up Bottling Company for 21 years. He finally retired from the Archway Cookie Company in 2004. Stephen was an avid golfer and University of Notre Dame football fan and also enjoyed spending time up north at the family cottage and around the pool in the summer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and niece Nancy. He is survived by his wife of 41 years JoAn; sons Christopher (Diana), Sean, Kevin (Jen), Keith; daughter Colleen (Justin) Hudson; brothers Tony (Kay) and David (Kathy); sister in law Mary Kay; grandchildren Hadley, Cullen, and Ainsley as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Friday, November 16 from 2 – 8 p.m. with a sharing of memories at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 17 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may take the form of contributions to the church.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the UTMC nurses Kelli, Arianna, and Mandy for their loving care.

Stephen had a wonderful sense of humor in tradition with all the Wernert men. I knew him from St. Francis DeSales High School. Stephen and I were also at St Meinrad Seminary together. He was a good spirit always ready to help anyone who needed it. I will miss his laughter !
