Suzanne Kowalka Obituary

Suzanne Kowalka

Suzanne Kowalka, 89, of East Toledo, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Browning Masonic Community with her daughter by her side. It was a peaceful end to the most wonderful life a person could ever hope to live.

Suzanne was born in Herrin, Illinois on August 30, 1928 to Dauss and Mayme (Wakeford) Thomas. Suzanne married her sixth grade sweetheart, Donald M. Kowalka, on July 16, 1949. They shared a love affair for the ages, spanning 72 years before his passing in 2011. Suzanne and Don operated six service stations and were pioneers in the automatic car wash business. They shared a love for Ohio State Buckeye football and attended home and away games for 30 years as season ticket holders. Together they shared a love for boating, fishing, travel, and parties, which they were often the life of. She adored him and enjoyed sitting on the pedestal he put her on. They were the perfect match. In addition to being an integral part of the family business; she owned and operated Suzanne's Bolts of Color, a popular fabric wall hanging shop, with three locations in Toledo. Suzanne was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she chaired numerous committees.

Suzanne saw the world, but it was Las Vegas where she felt most at home. An avid poker player, Suzanne would sit at tables for marathon sessions and experienced holding the rarest of hands: a royal flush, which would become a favorite story of hers for years to come. And what a storyteller she was! She had thousands of stories, and delivered them like a stand-up comedian. The woman could command a room. Later in life, when passing along her vast experiences verbally wasn't enough, Suzanne penned her autobiography and self-published it. Those lucky enough to have a copy on their book shelf have enjoyed and cherished it since its release. Suzanne will be remembered for her fierce loyalty to her family and her caring heart. She was truly a charismatic and dynamic woman who will be missed dearly.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; son, Lee Kowalka; brother, Carlos Thomas; and grandson, David D. Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda S. Saneholtz; grandson, Dean M. (Wendy) Smith; along with 7 great-grandchildren. Private Graveside services were held at Lake Township Cemetery. In Suzanne's honor, give your family a hug and a kiss. Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

I had the pleasure of knowing Suzanne and other wonderful women by being a member of the Womens Gasoline Dealers Assn of Northwest Ohio. We met for lunch once a month at various restaurants throughout the northwest ohio and michigan areas, to talk about functions. But Suzanne was always the life of the party!
As we were walking out after a long lunch, we all started to laugh as Suzanne had locked her car.....and left it running!!!!
She made everyone laugh and feel invited! She will be missed!

Sad to hear my God Mother had passed but in remembering, she did have a wonderful life. She would always get everyone up for the Kowalka reunions that we used to have. Always a lot of fun. And she is now back with my God Father Don Kowalka, so she truly is in heaven!
