Usha Gupta Obituary

Usha Gupta

April 13, 1947 - October 20, 2025

Dr. Usha Gupta, deeply beloved mother and wife, whose fierce commitment to the welfare of her children was always her north star and guiding light, passed away at her home on October 20th, 2025. She was 78 years old.

The middle daughter and one of 6 children of Janki Devi and Shiv Lal, raised in Punjab, India, her life was the epitome of resilience and persistence against the odds. Growing up in 1950s rural India, her nascent career hit roadblocks early on, as her parents did not prioritize her schooling; but as she did repeatedly throughout her life, she found a path around challenges and sought higher education, determined to succeed. After moving in with her aunt, she explored her curiosities in healthcare and life sciences, ultimately graduating with her medical doctorate from Medical College, Rohtak, in 1976. She then moved on to Boston and then New York to complete her medical training in Pediatrics and Neonatology at Albert Einstein and NYU, respectively.

Humble to a fault, she never felt entitled to this success and always expressed gratitude for the opportunities she seized so well. After completing her training, she took a position as a staff neonatologist at St Vincent's Medical Center in Toledo, OH, in 1984, where she continued to practice for the next 30+ years. Adored by patients and colleagues alike, she provided life-saving care for countless critically ill newborns in the area, rising to the position of Director of Neonatology during her tenure.

Beyond her successful career in medicine, her primary passion in life was caring for and raising her two sons, for whom she dedicated and sacrificed every fiber of her being. Her motherly devotion knew no bounds, consistently sacrificing her physical and material comfort.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Prem S. Gupta; her two sons, Dr. Naveen Gupta and Dr. Vin Gupta; daughter-in-law, Dr. Nisha Ahir; and her grandchildren, Aydan Gupta and Aarin Gupta.

Yesterday

I was new to working in the NICU when Dr.Gupta was hired. I learned so much from her. She helped my career in neonatal nursing to flourish over the years and to that I am eternally grateful. May you rest in peace. Prayers to the family.

Yesterday

I just wanted to say what a great woman Dr Gupta was. I meet her in 1993 when I delivered my daughter and then really got to know her in 1994 when I I delivered a son at 25 weeks. Dr . Gupta was my rock on some days and was a big part of saving my son´s life . When I returned to work I was recruited by NICU and now became her colleague as an RN . She was a very skilled and knowledgeable woman but more than that her love and compassion for the babies and their families was very evident. She was loved by all the staff , we missed her when she retired and thought of her often. Usha has been a huge role model to me a I can´t thank her enough, rest easy my friend..... we have got from here. I am glad I got to share in her life from many aspects calling her Dr, colleague but most of all friend. Even though I haven´t seen her in years you have been thought of often and the memories are cherished. Rest easy and enjoy your reward for a life well lived. And to her family know Usha adored you all, I may not have met you but I know about you and your accomplishments, she was so very proud.
