Virginia Saylor Obituary

Virginia "Ginny" W. Saylor

June 20, 1921 - November 10, 2021

Virginia "Ginny" W. Saylor went home to be with the Lord and her dear husband, Ernest "Ernie", on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 after a brief illness.

100 years young, Ginny lived a full life. Born to Edwin and Antoinette Wolff on June 20, 1921, Ginny graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1939 and went on to The University of Toledo (UT) for a Bachelor of Business degree (1943). While at UT, Ginny became a member of Pi Delta Chi sorority and remained active for several years.

After college graduation, Ginny worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron (1943-1945) and Dayton Rubber (1945-1947) as part of the "Flying Squadron" where she performed time-motion studies.

A few years later, Ginny returned to UT for additional education to become a teacher. Ginny had a passion for teaching and was a beloved and respected 3rd grade teacher at Nathan Hale Elementary School from 1957 to 1976. Through the years, prior students approached Ginny out in the community and remembered her as their wonderful 3rd grade teacher. They were her kids! One former student, Dave McClellan, sent Ginny flowers on her 99th birthday, crediting her teaching for his love of reading. It was at Nathan Hale that Ginny met her husband of 55 years, Ernie Saylor, another teacher.

Ginny recognized the importance of body, mind and spirit. For years, Ginny, participated in water aerobics and chair yoga. She and husband Ernie could tear up a dance floor! She enjoyed reading, played bridge for many years, and hosted incredible dinners for family and friends. Her infectious laughter brought joy to many!!!

A longtime member of Collingwood Presbyterian Church, Ginny was active with Lincoln League and Mariners and along with Ernie, prepared food for innumerable church events. An avid card sender and note writer, Ginny encouraged those who were hurting. As a member of a local chapter of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) for several years, Ginny loved to encourage education.

Ginny loved time with her family and through the years attended numerous sporting events for her family. Grandchildren remember fun outings for picnics and elder hostels and her deviled eggs were the best!

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jeffrey (Paula) Ballmer and Rustin Ballmer and 7 grandchildren, Kristen (Tim) Nicholson, Jeffrey (Karen) Ballmer, Corey (Genny) Ballmer, Amy Ballmer (Ian McDermott), Mitzi (Dan) Revill, Whitney (Chris) Baker, Anna (Jeremy) Davis; 10 great grandchildren and numerous family and friends.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Marilyn Wolff, Jane Smith, E. James Wolff Jr. and husband, Ernie Saylor who passed on September 5, 2021. Ginny and Ernie voiced their desire to go to their eternal home together.

A celebration of Ginny's life will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Collingwood Presbyterian Church, 2108 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo OH 43620. The family will receive guests from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Facial coverings are required.

Memorial contributions in Ginny's memory may be made to Collingwood Presbyterian Church, PEO Chapter E for educational scholarship funds for women (please mail to 2320 Townley Road, Toledo, OH 43614), or a charity of the donor's choice.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Promedica Hospice and Ohio Living/ Swan Creek Health Care Center and family physician, Dr. Louis Reiner.

At her request, Ginny's body was donated to The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, the former Medical College of Ohio.

She was my 3rd grade teacher at Nathan Hale. She was one of my favorite teachers. It was my first year at Nathan Hale and maybe her first year also. My condolences to her family and friends.

Mrs Balmer was my third grade teacher at Nathan Hale. She was one of my very favorite teachers as she instilled a love of learning but also because she was very kind. Our mother was a resident at Swan Creek for nearly 10 years until her death on 2/9/21. I´m sad that I never got the opportunity to visit with Mrs. Sailor to tell her that I remember her still and that she meant a lot to me. She made a difference in the world. I am retired after a 31 year career in education, so I know what it is to have a teacher who puts her heart and soul into her career!
