Waymon Usher Obituary

USHER Mr. Waymon Waymon Michael Usher "Buddy", age 58, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 30th, 2006, at The University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. After a hard fought battle against cancer, our Lord finally called him to rest. He was born on April 25th, 1948, in Toledo to hard working and loving parents, Clara and John. He later graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School and went on to attain a bachelor's degree in business administration from Ohio University in Athens in 1970. He finalized his education when he graduated from the University of Toledo with a master's degree in business administration (MBA) in 1978. Waymon was devoted to his career as well as his community. As director of Economic Development for both the City of Toledo and Lucas County, he led his staff in the creation and management of programs which have generated millions of dollars for new and expanding businesses in Lucas County. As a result of his work, thousands of jobs were created in the Greater Toledo area and the rest of Lucas County. Waymon took active roles in many professional organizations throughout his lifetime. He was a board member for the Lucas County Improvement Corporation and The Substance Abuse Service, Incorporated. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and the Ohio Economic Development Association. In 1996, Waymon was recognized by his community for his hard work when he was presented with the Spirit of Toledo award. Waymon worked tirelessly to make achievements in his career, but he was most proud of his wife and children. He was determined to be a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time and providing for his family. He was a loving companion to his wife, Cleo Denise, and a positive role-model to his son, John and daughter, Elizabeth who loved him dearly. Along with his wife and two children, Waymon is also survived by his sisters, Crissie Marie Usher-Frye and Melissa Awls, both of Toledo, Ohio; as well as his many relatives. Waymon was known by his friends and colleagues as an intelligent, generous and good natured man who emitted an aura of integrity and always practiced fair judgment. He was highly respected by his community and many people depended on him for sound and honest advice. His legacy will always be remembered and he will truly be missed. The Usher Family would like to give special thanks to Jettie and Joe Sansbury, Shawn Sansbury-Townsend, Jacob and Janeanne Jones, the Central Catholic High School family, and Waymon's county co-workers for their unhesitating support and to the University of Michigan Hospital staff for their exceptional effort in caring for Waymon during his time of sickness. Visitation on Saturday, August 5, 2006, at Gesu Parish, 2049 Parkside Boulevard, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with Alpha Phi Alpha rites at 10:30 a.m. and the Funeral Mass beginning at 11 a.m., Father Mike Geiger, Officiant. Interment, Calvary Cemetery. The C. Brown Funeral Home, Inc., Directors (419-255-7682).

It is not by chance that his nickname was Buddy Boy; for he truly was just that to the boys who grew up on Indiana Ave. He was a tremendous friend, an intellectual pioneer and an outstanding human being. Though I have not seen him for years, his influence on my life, his friendship in my youth, and his evervescent smile will always be remembered. He is the second of two great intellectual spirits to leave us from the Indiana Avenue group; the other being Donald Maddox. Always your friend and protoge.

Dearest Denise and Family,

Please accept our heart felt condolences. Words can not begin to express our sorrow. Waymon's presence on this earth was very special. He touched everyone he came into contact with and made this city a better place to live as a result. My life has been enriched as a result of knowing him. I will always remember him to be upbeat, never down, and always looking for a way to get the deal done. I am certain that great stories of his accomplishments and achievements will become the material of modern history.

I have admired the great courage and strength that you and your family have shown not only through this difficult period, but also during his career. You are a living testament to the saying, “beside every great man, there is a great woman.” I considered him to be a mentor. It has been my personal honor and privilege to have known and learned from a one-of-a-kind man like Waymon Usher. May God bless and grace your family.

I knew Buddy Boy since the age of 6 till I was 38 yrs when I relocated to California, He was always a kind to everyone who meet him, a good listener and a caring person. I always counted as a friend for life, like a blood brother. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends and the good memories of Buddy boy.

Dear Denise,

I am so sorry to hear about Buddy. I remember the fun we all shared while in college and as Sorors. Most of all I remember the love you and Buddy shared over these many years. May God bless you and your family... and grant you peace in the years to come.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
