William Westmeyer Obituary

William Roland "Kip" Westmeyer

Kip Westmeyer, 80, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away on October 21, 2024. He was born to Joseph and Rita June (Miller) Westmeyer on February 8, 1944, in Toledo, Ohio. Kip was the third oldest of four raucous brothers, growing up in South Toledo and attending St. James Elementary school. He went on to graduate from St. Francis DeSales High School in Toledo and then on to college at the University of Toledo, where he studied education.

After graduating from the University of Toledo, Kip embarked on his formal career as an educator. He was employed for over thirty years by Toledo Public Schools, teaching primarily math, and then retiring as dean of students at Jones Junior High in Toledo. During his career as an educator, he was also a department chairperson, a class advisor, a chess coach, and a tennis coach.

While attending the University of Toledo, Kip met, fell in love with, and married Janis (Jan) Groth, to whom he was married for fifty-one years until her death in 2019. They had one amazing son, Jeff, that Kip adored with his whole heart. Kip loved teaching Jeff best of all and spent tireless hours showing Jeff how to play numerous sports, chess, checkers, cards, games, how to cook, how to think his way out of anything, and how to compete.

Kip was an avid golfer, devoting any spare time he had outside of his family and career to chasing that little white ball at various courses across the country – which included one career ace. In addition to golf, Kip was an extraordinary bridge player, often partnering with his wife or younger brother, Tony. Kip obtained the bridge ranking of Ruby Life Master. Kip also loved to garden, growing various fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Kip loved to compete, had a quick wit and mischievous sense of humor, but most of all, was kind and cared about the people around him. From his favorite hobbies to his keen storytelling, Kip's presence will continue to be felt by those who had the privilege of knowing him in this lifetime.

Left to cherish Kip's memory is his son, Jeff (Melissa) Westmeyer; and friend, Dianne Mariea. He is also survived by his brothers, Dick (Patty) Westmeyer, and Tony (Kay) Westmeyer; and his sister-in-law, Judy Westmeyer, as well as numerous other Westmeyer and Walsh family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepmother, Mary Janet; his brother, Joe; and his wife, Jan.

Family and friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH 43614, on Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private.

I am so sorry to hear of Kip´s passing. Although I have never met him, I have a connection to him. He worked in my father´s bakery while he was in high school. My father later named me William "Kip" because he was the finest young man my father knew. Ironically, I am also a high school math teacher. I´m sure many of his students have fond memories of his class.
