Murray Earl Hanway
April 19, 1948 - June 26, 2025
Murray Hanway passed away peacefully, surrounded by love at his home in Moab, Utah. He was 77.
Born in Casper, Wyoming, to Earl and Patricia Hanway. Murray grew up in a family deeply rooted in Wyoming's newspaper legacy. His great-grandfather, J.E. Hanway, began publishing the Casper Daily Tribune in 1916, followed by The Casper Herald. Later became the Casper Tribune-Herald, eventually owned by Murray's father. Murray spent summers on the family ranch, cultivating a lifelong love of the outdoors with horseback riding, skiing, golfing, fishing, hunting, 4-H and other pursuits.
After graduating from Natrona County High School, Murray earned his B.S. in Business Administration degree from Colorado State University in 1971. He married Linda Richardson in 1969, and their son, Robert Earl "Bobby", was born in 1970 while Murray completed his degree.
Murray began his career at Hilltop National Bank in Casper, then a systems analyst at Hogan Systems in Ft. Collins, CO, converting banks across multiple states from paper to computerized systems. In 1989, the family relocated to Grand Junction, CO, where he co-owned a consulting firm and later served over 20 years as Director of Information Technology at Central Distributing/Anheuser-Busch.
Murray enjoyed golfing, skiing, golfing, fishing, canoeing and rafting, especially on the Colorado River and Grand Mesa. A home brewer, he won blue ribbons for his watermelon beer. Also, a dedicated moviegoer, sharing film outings with his grandson and buddy, Dylan.
In 2008, Murray married Katie Brock in Moab, Utah. They built a happy life together, and after retiring, he moved to Moab full-time. A baptized member of the Community Church, he found faith and lasting friendships.
Murray was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Earl; sister, Randee Wilfert; and stepdaughter, Tracey Carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Katie, son, Robert "Bobby" Hanway (Wendy), stepson, Kevin Cooper (Robin), stepson-in-law, David Carpenter and brother, Gregory Hanway. Grandchildren: Dylan Hanway, Morgan Lee, Thomas Allred, Collin Cooper, Tristan Cooper, Brittney Donner, and their families.
Memorial Service on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of Moab, 544 North MiVida Drive, Moab, Utah.
