Wendell Doil Tekell, 91, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, in Desert Hot Springs, California.
Wendell was born on January 20, 1934, in Wingate, Texas, to Comma and Beatrice Tekell. In 1954, he married Effie Joyce Tekell. Their marriage lasted 61 beautiful years until Joyce's passing in 2015. Wendell proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, a reflection of his enduring commitment to service.
A lifelong career in the oil field took the family across the country before settling in Casper, Wyoming, in 1977. Wendell and Joyce became active members of the Bar Nunn communityhe served on the City Council and as Fire Chief, while Joyce contributed through the Parks and Recreation Committee. Together, they helped plant trees, develop parks, and strengthen the town's spirit.
Wendell's life was marked by unwavering faith. He served as an elder and deacon in every church he attended and helped build several churches in Colorado and Wyoming, including Bar Nunn Baptist Church. He and Joyce also joined the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief team, aiding cleanup efforts in New York City after the September 11 attacks.
After Joyce's passing, Wendell moved permanently to Desert Hot Springs, where he became a dedicated member of Grace Church. His compassion, humility, and servant's heart made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Wendell was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joyce, his parents Comma and Bea, and his brother Cecil. He is lovingly remembered by his childrenWanda Tekell, Anita Hunter, Twila Tekell, and Tina Sterkenhis sister Eyvonne Lasater, brother Roland Tekell, and many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren across the country. His family was his greatest joy.
Wendell will be remembered for his generous spirit, strong faith, and love for others. He lived as a true servant of Godalways ready with a helping hand or a word of encouragement. His legacy is one of faith, love, and selfless devotion.
