Catherine Thomas Obituary

Catherine Ann Thomas (Holzer), 70, of Indian Land, SC, passed away suddenly on May 14, 2024, at the age of 70, due to a heart condition. Born in Sewickley, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frederick M. Holzer Jr. and Elinor Jean (Kraus) Holzer. Cathy followed in her mother's footsteps and became a nurse, practicing for 40 years after obtaining her nursing degree in Colchester, VT. Cathy married her high school sweetheart, Gordon Butler Thomas, who preceded her in death in 2014. Cathy and Gordon married on Sept. 23, 1979, on a mountaintop in Stowe, VT, surrounded by family and close friends. Their bond was unparalleled, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their relationship was a testament to the power of love and acceptance, transcending societal barriers and embracing everyone with open hearts. Cathy is survived by her 'girls,' Alexa 'Lexie' Fratoe and her husband, Mike, along with their children, Ella and Max (Indian Land, SC); and Emily 'Emmy' Creek and her husband, Jason, along with their children, Sheldon, Hadley, Cooper, and Knox (Newville, PA). She also leaves behind her brother, Richard 'Fritz' Holzer (Kim); and three sisters, Cynthia Briggs (Lance), Christine Cook (Dave), and Carolyn Benedict (Greg); numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; and her beloved Boston Terrier, Tess. Cathy was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. Her quiet strength, patience, and nurturing spirit made her the rock of her family. A guiding light, a source of unwavering support, and a model of grace and kindness. She had an incredible ability to bring out the best in everyone around her and was always there to offer a listening ear and a comforting hug. Her home was always open, a place of warmth and welcome for family and friends alike. Cathy's greatest joy was spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, especially in her cherished role as "Mimi." She frequently traveled with Tess to visit 'Emmy's" family and was seen almost daily at 'Lexie's" home. The annual trip where they were all together and she was surrounded by her six grandchildren was something she looked forward to every year. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy; she treasured every moment with them, nurturing their uniqueness and making each one feel special and loved. Cathy was always ready to talk sports with her sons-in-law, keeping up with their teams no matter the season. She also loved spending time with her siblings, frequently visiting her brother and sisters, and delighting in family gatherings filled with favorite dishes and tearful laughter. On Friday evenings, Cathy enjoyed eating pizza and sharing stories with two childhood friends. She had many hidden talents and passions. As a child, she was a state champion swimmer. She was also a wonderful artist who enjoyed restoring old furniture, decorating, gardening, knitting for her grandchildren, and watching bluebirds in her backyard. Cathy was an avid reader and delighted in recommending and discussing books with her sisters. Cathy lived life to the fullest, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her calming presence, her ability to make others feel safe and loved, and her positive outlook on life will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Her unwavering acceptance, grace, and unconditional love are qualities that will be carried forward by those who knew her best. To honor Cathy's life, the family will host a private gathering over the summer. In lieu of flowers, the family plans to create an endowment for nurses in her honor, though this will take time to set up. For those who wish to contribute immediately, donations can be made to Paws in the Panhandle Rescue and Adoption. Donations can be sent by mail to 222 Palmetto Kennel Lane, Lancaster, SC 29720, or online at Paws in the Panhandle Donation Page. Please include Catherine Thomas' name in the memo or notes. The family is deeply grateful for your support during this difficult time.
