Richard Newton Obituary

Richard Harry "Dick" Newton, 69, formerly of McKeesport, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, with his wife and children by his side. He was a 1967 graduate of McKeesport High School. Dick nurtured his passion for music early in his life by entertaining his family in the kitchen. Within a few years, along with high school friends, he formed a band, The Fantastic Dee Jays; they recorded an album and had air time on local radio stations. They performed on store rooftops, special events, and opened for the infamous Rolling Stones when they passed through Pittsburgh. He married his high-school sweetheart, Mae L. (Patterson) in 1966, and pursued a career in business operations, spending a majority of his time at John Sexton Food Distribution. He pursued a few businesses, but found fulfillment in writing, later self-publishing a book titled "Oceannis." He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry C. and Laura M. (Lutz) Newton; two brothers, Donald Newton and William Newton; two sisters, Lanna Bender and Mary Hartnett. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mae L.; sister, Carol Santone; brother, James and his wife Donna Newton; brother-in-law and "partner in crime," Gene Bender; as well as his four children, Rebecca M. Tebeau, Tracie R. (Patrick M.) Bowen, Carey A. (Eric C.) Takach, and Benjamin J. Newton; and nine grandchildren, Zach, Adam, Cory, AJ, Emily, Jessica, Graeson, Ellery, Emerson; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Maverick.
With his wishes to leave the world being entertained by the motion of our beautiful oceans, his ashes will be spread among them. There will be a memorial service in Pittsburgh; if interested in attending, please email [email protected] or visit fb.me/dicknewtonFDJ.

Only a few weeks ago, I posted a question on Facebook: "What was the name of the local band out of Mckeesport? who when we were in H.S. made "Love is so Tough" and 'Two times Two"?
I attended a catholic all girls high school in Pittsburgh in the late '60
s. We were huge Terry Lee fans. At all of our dances, those two songs were played by the Fantastic Deejays and we LOVED them! I could not remember the name and someone directed me to You Tube where you can find one of them ("Love is tough") . Then, today, I see this obit.
Thanks to Dick and the rest of the boys for providing us with wonderful high school times and memories. It seems like only yesterday and he is gone way before his time. This makes me very sad indeed.

My sympathy to his family. Being a Disc Jockey myself and a friend of TERRY "LEE" Albert Trunzo and also T. L.'S bodyguard CHARLEY HATFIELD this death means there are not to many original members left with the FANTATIC DEE JAYS. Pittsburgh has truly lost a lot of great group members not only in 2017 but it is happening once again in 2018. Lord have mercy on them for giving us this great talent to be never replaced. I know they are now playing together with the almighty Savior.
