Benjamin Getty Obituary

Benjamin H. Getty, 81, of Murrysville, died Sunday, March 21, 2010. He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Benjamin F. and Anne Pursley Getty. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving on the USS Wyoming and USS Missouri and was the founder of Gateway Packaging Corp. of Export in 1968. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Murrysville, a member and past president of the Murrysville-Export Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and he also made his wife and all his children Paul Harris Fellows, was very active in various Rotary functions including the Interact Club at Franklin Regional High School. He was a member of the Willowbrook Country Club, involved in the American Field Service and was Murrysville Citizen of the Year in the early 1980's. Ben loved his church and his family and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew John Getty, in 2002; two brothers, Paul and Thomas Getty; and two sisters, Janet Henderson and Marilyn Schlerf. Ben is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hanka Getty; three sons, Kenneth (Donna) Getty, of Greensburg, Benjamin C. Getty, of Delmont, and Scott (Ann) Getty, of Apollo; two daughters, Denise (James) Getty-Olson, of Pasadena, Calif., and Amy (Jeff) Getty Rogers, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Brian, Lauren, Michael, John, Emily, Hannah and Jack; a great grandchild, Darren; two brothers, William Getty, of the South Hills, and George Getty, of Forest Hills; and a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the HART FUNERAL HOME INC., Murrysville. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Murrysville with Pastor Tom Shrum officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH. Interment will follow in the Murrysville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Murrysville Export Rotary Club.
