Donald Fraley Obituary
Donald Symons Fraley Jr., M.D., of Claridge Place, Pittsburgh, on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001. Born April 1, 1943, a son of Christine S. (Roberts) Fraley of Carlisle and the late Donald S. Fraley Sr. He is survived by his wife, the former Zella Rose Zeigler, whom he married June 15, 1968; a son, Donald S. Fraley III; a brother, Douglas R. Fraley and wife Sara Jane Heffendrager; and sister, Christine F. Lambert and husband Edward F. Lambert. Dr. Fraley was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and chief resident at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. He completed a research fellowship at UPMC Montefiore, then took over Montefiore's ICU, a responsibility he maintained for many years. For over 25 years, he taught medicine and nephrology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he was beloved by those he taught and served as mentor to more than 400 students. The remained of his career was spent caring for patients with renal disease. In addition, he authored numerous articles on acid-base physiology as it applies to the clinical patient. He was an honorary member of A.O.A. and elected by students for outstanding teaching at the School of Medicine where he was the hooder for two successive years for the medical school seniors. Dr. Fraley served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy for 13 months in Vietnam, where he ran a hospital for Vietnamese civilians and Korean soldiers. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. Following his tour of duty in Vietnam, he served 11 months as a physician in the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He was active for more than 20 years in the Train Collectors Association (member #71-3451) and had served as the organization's president. He was editor of "Lionel Standards of the World," published in an original and updated version, and recognized as the "Bible of train collecting." He was a member of the Toy Train Operating Society and past secretary of the Train Collectors Club of America. He was a member of the American Genealogy Society and compiled a "Genealogic History of the Hans Michael Froelich Family." Friends received in the MCCABE BROTHERS, INC. FUNERAL HOME, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside, Friday 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., where Funeral Service will be Friday at 8 p.m. Funeral Services with Military Rites will be conducted in the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, Pa., Saturday at 1 p.m., where visitation with family will be Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
