Donna Holland Obituary

Donna Boyle Holland, 84, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, after living a full and happy life as a loving mother, devoted wife, dedicated and charitable volunteer, caring friend and faithful servant of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Donna Holland was the wife of the Rev. Dr. Robert Cleveland Holland, who served as minister of Shadyside Presbyterian Church from 1972 until his death in 1983. She is survived by her daughter, Merritt Holland Spier, and son-in-law, David Samuel Spier, of Wexford. Born in Erie, Pa., in 1926, Donna went on to graduate from business school and then married Robert C. Holland in 1949. Together, they served churches in Bayonne, N.J., Bath, N.Y., Columbus, Ohio, Morristown, N.J., and Pittsburgh. Donna Holland loved traveling and the arts. She spent summers at Chautauqua Institution in New York where she served on the board of trustees of the Presbyterian House and as treasurer of the Wensley Guest House. She was also a graduate of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, the longest running book club in America. In Pittsburgh, Donna served as president of the board of Vintage Inc., served as a docent at Phipps Conservatory and as a volunteer for the Carnegie Museum of Art just to name a few of her many volunteer projects. Donna would want all who knew her to celebrate her life by being helpful to those in need, giving generously to charity and, most importantly, by being devoted to our faith. A memorial service to celebrate Donna Holland's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shadyside Presbyterian Church. Donna B. Holland will be buried alongside her husband at Chautauqua Memorial Cemetery in Mayville, N.Y. Arrangements by JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS INC., 412-621-1665. In lieu of flowers, the family of Donna B. Holland requests that memorial contributions be sent to either Shadyside Presbyterian Church or Vintage Inc.
