George Sweeney Obituary

George R. Sweeney Jr., 50, of Rostraver Township, died Saturday, July 9, 2005, in his home. Born in Mt. Pleasant, June 3, 1955, he was a son of George R. II and Norma Jean Yakubic Sweeney, who survive and reside in Rostraver Township. George was a 1973 graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School and a 1977 honors graduate of St. Vincent College with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry. He also completed studies at the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Pricedale Union Church. George was manager of operations for the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County. Prior to his present position with the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County, he worked as a chemist and quality control technician with the agency. He also had worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). He was past president of the Water Works Association of Pennsylvania, served on the Pennsylvania DEP Water Resource Board, was a member of the American Water Works Association, and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was elected to the board of trustees of Monongahela Valley Hospital and to the board of directors of its parent company, Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc., in June 2003. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Lance Cpl. Michael J. Sweeney, USMC, serving in Iraq; two daughters, Lauren J. Sweeney, Esquire, of Rostraver Township, and Lindsay M. Sweeney, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John F. and Christy Sweeney, of South Huntingdon Township, Patrick R. and Carolyn Sweeney, of Mapletown, and Michael T. and Laurie Sweeney, of North Huntingdon; sister, Anna Marie Sweeney, of Rostraver Township; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Sweeney Plan/Rostraver Township, (724-929-7934), where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor James Mimidis officiating. Interment in the Sweeney family plot will follow in West Newton Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to: The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society, Two Gateway Center, 13 North, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
