Lawrence McVitty Obituary

Lawrence F. McVitty, 91, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, in Harrisburg Hospital. He was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Swissvale, a son of the late William J. and Maude (Craver) McVitty. He retired as head of the art department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and had previously taught in the Milton Hershey and Harrisburg school districts. Mr. McVitty was a member of the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church, Eureka Lodge 302 F&AM, the PSEA, was a former president of the Pennsylvania Art Educators Association and a member of Phi Delta Kappa. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Claire C. McVitty; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Charles Schaeffer of Mechanicsburg; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Gail McVitty of Mechanicsburg; a brother, Roy Myers of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandsons, David, Douglas, Daniel, Michael and James. Friends received Wednesday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the MYERS FUNERAL HOME INC., 37 E. Main St., Mechanicsburg (717-766-3421), where service will follow visitation at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Richard D. Sweeney and Myrtle E. McCall officiating. Interment Friday at 1 p.m. in Springtown Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to his church at 300 E. Simpson St., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
