Leo Doerfler Obituary

Dr. Leo G. Doerfler, 85, formerly of Whitehall, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, in Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y. Dr. Doerfler is generally considered one of the founding fathers of the field of audiology. He established the audiology department at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a full professor and director for almost 30 years. Thereafter, he had a distinguished career in private practice in the Latrobe-Greensburg area. He published widely on various important issues in audiology, served as president of the American Speech and Hearing Association and received many honors and awards in the field. Husband of the late Alice T. Doerfler. Father of Dennis Lee Doerfler of St. Louis, Donald Lee Doerfler of Burlington, N.C., David Lee Doerfler of Latrobe and Ann Laura Doerfler-Horn of Oyster Bay Cove. Father-in-law of Deborah, Birean, Ann and Jack. Also survived by 11 grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME INC., 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood. Friends are welcome to gather at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial at 11 in Jefferson Memorial Park. The family suggests contributions to Pittsburgh Vision Services, 311 Station St., Bridgeville, PA 15017. www.johnfslater.com.
