Nurten Gunduz Obituary

Dr. Nurten (Nur) Gunduz O'Hara Township Dr. Nurten (Nur) Gunduz, 71, of O'Hara Township passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, in Didim, Turkey. Dr. Gunduz was born March 20, 1941, in Komothini, Greece, to Semsettin and Naciye Nur, now deceased. She was preceded by her beloved husband, Dincer Hakki Gunduz; brother, Hasan Nur; aunt, Ayse Usanmaz; nephew, Galip Usanmaz; and grandson, Emir Almaleky. Dr. Gunduz is survived by her daughter, Nadide Yesim (Nasser) Gunduz-Almaleky, of Indiana Township; granddaughter, Emire Almaleky; and son, Alper Tansu (Jaime) Gunduz. Dr. Gunduz worked for two decades with Dr. Bernard Fisher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Project as a breast cancer researcher, publishing several joint papers and pioneering the widespread acceptance and use of the drug tamoxifen to treat breast cancer. Dr. Gunduz was an avid world traveler and shared her time between the United States and Turkey after her retirement. She lived a rich, marvelous life to its fullest and was the author of a fictional novel, Kevser. Dr. Gunduz will be gravely missed by her family and friends and has been laid to rest in her family plot at Isikkent Cemetary in Izmir, Turkey.
