Richard Crowell Obituary

Richard S. Crowell of Monroeville died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003. Born Sept. 29, 1916, he was a World War II Air Force veteran who flew 53 missions and received 10 Air Medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Presidential Citations. He also was a B-29 instructor and operations and training officer. Before enlisting, Richard attended the University of Texas. After leaving active duty in 1945, he received his degree at Penn State University and joined U.S. Steel Corp. as a metallurgist. He retired as a consultant and chief research engineer in 1981. Richard was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. For two years, he served as president of the Full Gospel Business Men's Association and was an active member of the Monroeville/Pitcairn Drug and Alcohol Task Force. Richard also was persistent in promoting character development curriculum in the schools. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen; son, Ronald Crowell; daughters, Barbara Barnes, Loretta Crowell and Janet Crowell; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Jesus Christ was his Lord. Richard will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements by the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville.
