Stephen Hansen Obituary

Stephen C. Hansen, 67, died peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007. He was born July 3, 1940, in New York City and raised there and recently retired from his position as chairman and CEO of Dollar Bank, which recently became the largest, free-standing mutual bank in the country. He led the institution to unprecedented growth and diversity over 34 years while maintaining the bank's mutuality and independence to benefit its customers and communities. Mr. Hansen graduated from St. Paul's School, Princeton University and the University of Virginia School of Law and began his career as a member of the New York Bar but soon determined to become more involved in the social and economic aspects of our country. Before coming to Pittsburgh and Dollar Bank, he was one of the youngest elected members of the New York state legislature. He followed this with positions as adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), special assistant to the undersecretary of Housing and Urban Development and special assistant to the chairman of the FDIC. Mr. Hansen was involved heavily in the community through his participation on numerous boards, including the Cleveland Federal Reserve, Carnegie Institute and Pittsburgh's public broadcasting, WQED. He was chairman of the board of the American Respiratory Alliance and the Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Western Pennsylvania. Stephen is survived by his wife, Ethel Olmsted Hansen; son, Lee C. Hansen; daughter-in-law, Gretchen W. Hansen; grandchildren, Victoria A. and William L. Hansen; nephews, William P. and Timothy E. Taft, and aunt, Barbara C. Emeny. Interment will be in a family plot in Locust Valley, N.Y. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, followed by a gathering for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania, 5432 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201-3096, 412-782-5710.
