Virginia McCarthy Obituary

Virginia S. McCarthy of Glenshaw died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. As a 58-year resident of Glenshaw, Mrs. McCarthy was a charter member of and supporter of St. Bonaventure Church. She was a faith-filled woman who did her best to recognize and accomplish God's will in her life. Wife of the late William J. McCarthy. She was the dearly loved mother of Eileen McCarthy of Ontario, Canada; Ann Rooney of Barcelona, Spain; Mary Carroll (John Andrew Jr.) and Joan Hodges of Winchester, Mass.; James McCarthy (Abby) of Ipswich, Mass.; William J. McCarthy (Deborah) of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.; Virginia McCarthy of Boston and Point Breeze, and John (Deborah) and Margaret McCarthy of Allison Park. Also survived by the grandchildren who gave her so much joy, Julia, Lelah, William and Mary McCarthy of Allison Park; Katharine Carroll of Vermont; Jamin Sylvada of California; John Andrew III, Michael and Brendan Carroll, Mark and Justin Ficken and Joseph, Lauren and Conor McCarthy of Boston, and Sarah and Erin McCarthy of New York and Florida. Also survived by nine great-grandchildren; sister Patricia Ackerly of Miami; sisters-in-law Katharine Shelare of Bronxville, N.Y., and Lorraine Shannon of Amityville, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews, and a number of dear and special friends. She also was predeceased by parents John and Elsie Shannon, sister Evelyn Foster and brothers Dudley and John "Bud" Shannon. Her children would like to thank her doctor, George Gleeson, M.D., and so many of the staff at UPMC Cranberry Place for their care of and affection for our mother. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at NEELYS, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Shaler. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Bonaventure Church, Shaler. Burial will follow in Christ Our Redeemer (North Side Catholic) Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions to the National Parkinson's Foundation or Maryknoll Missions.
