Mary Anderson-Moore Obituary

Mary Judith "Judy" Anderson-Moore, an attorney and former bank executive from West View, recently of Woburn, MA, who loved bridge, dogs, and chardonnay not necessarily in that order passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 17, 2025, after a fall in her home. Her death came three days before her 81st birthday. Judy was a decades-long executive at PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, working in the Trust department until her retirement in 2014. She had recently moved from her home in West View to Woburn to be closer to family. Judy was the daughter of Mary (Broderick) Anderson and college football hall of famer Dr. Eddie Anderson, the legendary coach of the University of Iowa and Holy Cross football teams, and captain of the 1921 Notre Dame team coached by Knute Rockne. Judy herself was an avid college football fan who spent many weekends with her father on the sidelines of Holy Cross games and closely followed the Hawkeyes her entire life. Indeed, she recently made a bet on an upcoming Iowa game. Her nephew celebrated the result by teasing, "I am right, and you are . . . ." "Judy!" she fired back. She spent many happy summers of her youth in Old Lyme, CT, where the family had a beach house. Judy was acknowledged to be the coolest of the siblings. In the 1960s she went on a date with tennis great Arthur Ashe at a time when biracial dating was considered by many to be ahem. On one of the Beatles' first U.S. tours, Judy got caught in an elevator in New York City with John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Born on Sept. 20, 1944, in Iowa City, Judy was a 1966 graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. She worked as a probation officer at Framingham District Court in Massachusetts before graduating from Suffolk University Law School in 1977, the same year she married her loving husband, Thomas Moore. She was predeceased by her three older brothers, Edward Nicholas (Nick), James Thomas (Jim), and Jerome D. (Jerry). Judy also was predeceased in 2001 by her husband, Thomas Moore, of West View, and in 2022; by her longtime partner, Richard "Dick" Matlow, of Pittsburgh. She is survived by two stepdaughters, Kirsten Moore of Washington, DC, and Trina Moore of Waltham, MA. Survivors also include nine nephews and nieces, 13 great-nephews and nieces, and the last in a line of beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Sweetie. She left behind many friends in the Pittsburgh area, among whom were former bank colleagues and fellow bridge partners, dog lovers, and chardonnay quaffers. "I'll remember Judy as a quick-witted, stubborn, and very independent friend who could always make me laugh," said longtime friend Barb Starr. "She was one of a kind." There will be a celebration of Judy's life in Old Lyme at a date to be determined. Arrangements are under the direction of the LYNCH-CANTILLION FUNERAL HOME, 263 Main St., Woburn, MA 01801.
