Mary Ann Hix

1935 - 2021

Mary Ann Deal Hix passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021, at Country Meadows in Bridgeville, with her daughter Patty at her side. She was born Oct. 30, 1935, in Spartanburg, S.C., to Ruth and Esbon Deal. She graduated from Spartanburg High School and graduated from Winthrop University. In 1957, she married L. Thomas Tom Hix until his passing in 2007. After moving to northern Virginia in the 1960s, she worked at Fairfax Hospital, supervising the serology and urinalysis labs and working in the pathology department, until her retirement in 1994. In 1996, Tom and Mary Ann moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, then to Florida in 2005, and finally (as a widow) to Bridgeville in 2009. She devoted much of her life to her work, as well as being a treasured wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker. She loved cooking for her family and reading. After her husband's retirement, they travelled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Mary Ann was blessed with having a large and loving family. She was predeceased by four brothers, Raymond, James, Edward and Dee; and two sisters, Sarah Deal and Miriam Grant. She is survived by her four children, Debora McCoy (Donnie), L. Thomas Hix Jr. (Susan), Patricia Silberstein (Dave) and Katherine O'Neal; 10 grandchildren, Erik (Nami), Katy (Jay), Stephanie, Maggie, Tayten, Kaden, Kyle, Elly, Race and Imani; five great-grandchildren, Ewan, Elijah, Oliver, Noah and Lucas; and her many nieces and nephews. We will all miss her tender loving care. A date for a memorial is TBD until the pandemic is under control and it is safe to gather.
