Theresa Ludwig Obituary

With heavy hearts and many fond memories, we bid farewell to Theresa (Sano) Ludwig, 94, of The Villages, FL. She passed peacefully away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, while with family members in Central Oregon. Born in Grapeville, Theresa grew up in Pitcairn, graduating as salutatorian of Pitcairn High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Francis "Wayne" Ludwig, who served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. As military dependents, she and her five children lived in numerous U.S. states and abroad, including England and Germany. Theresa was a woman of many talents and pursuits, raising her family while working and participating in a variety of civic and community activities. After retiring from U.S. Civil Service, Theresa and Wayne spent summers in their Monroeville home, remaining close to relatives there and in Pitcairn, Jeanette, Pittsburgh, Allentown, and Wall. Theresa was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Francis Wayne Ludwig; daughter, Sheree Ludwig-Tiller; and her native Pennsylvanian siblings, Dominick Sano, Joseph Sano, Ross Sano, Tony Sano, Carmella "Tootsie" Tessmer (nee Sano), Christina Sano, Grace Edge (nee Mignogna, nee Sano), and Rose Winwood (nee Sano). She is survived by three daughters, Lynda Crowley, Ramona Tweed (Kerry), and Michele Ludwig; and one son, Wayne Ludwig (Cindy). Theresa had six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives, including cousins, nieces, and nephews. For information on her celebration of life next month in Florida, please email [email protected]. Theresa was a strong, smart, kind, and generous woman of faith who fully embraced life and others. She will surely be missed as much as she was loved by all.

Our prayers and condolences go out to the Ludwig family. We are truly sorry for your loss.

I have to share how I first met Frank & Theresa. Fifty years ago I was a young buck just out of the Navy going to college to get my degree. Before my degree was conferred, I traveled to Syracuse, NY to interview for a Federal position. My interviewer was this tough, gruff USN retiree by the name of Frank Ludwig.

We hit it off and I was hired in December, 1975. I traveled to Syracuse to start my new job and that's when I met Theresa, one of the kindest women I have ever met. She knew me as Frank's new guy and she opened her home for me to stay until I set up permanent housing. I felt like I was moving in with family. I was transferred out in August 1976 due to the needs of the DOD and we lost track of each other again. By the time I returned to Syracuse they were on to their next adventure.

Jump 20 years later I was on a TAD assignment to Key West, FL. Lo and behold, Frank was the Safety Manager at Naval Air Station, KW! We reconnected. We remember reconnecting and enjoying their company at their home on Laird Street. My TAD assignment had finished and back to Syracuse we went.

I do remember the few beers, maybe more than a few, Frank and I had at the Howard Johnsons on N. Roosevelt Blvd. We lost touch again as we went on to our separate adventures.

I was flabbergasted when I saw Theresa's obit in the Keys Citizen yesterday. It took me a while to compose myself. I can tell you Frank and Theresa were influential in my growth as a person and my progression in my career. I am proud to have known them and I will never forget.

Karen and I are still in Key West and our home is open to all the Ludwig family if they should travel this way.
