Carol Williams Obituary

The world lost a truly great lady on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022. Carol Ann (Fagan) Williams, longtime resident of Scottdale, passed peacefully at home, in the presence of her loving husband and son. She was known to many as a most thoughtful, loyal and loving friend, always willing to help anyone in need at any time of the day or night. Carol truly loved being with people and enjoyed entertaining family and friends at home or abroad. Most joyful was Easter and Christmas Eve dinners featuring the feast of the seven fishes for more than 75 friends and family. Carol also cherished family vacations which she would organize and include everyone who was able to attend. Carol was born Sept. 17, 1956, in Greensburg, the first of four children to Concetta A. Fratto and the late Joseph P. Fagan. She was undoubtedly the joy of their lives. She was a voracious reader and had a limitless memory for every topic imaginable. A lifelong Catholic, she attended St. John the Baptist Grade School, Geibel Catholic High School, and Boston College, having graduated summa cum laude in the spring of 1978 with a dual major in English literature and art history. After graduating college, she moved to Philadelphia to be with her husband while he attended medical school and completed residency training. During those six years, she would travel daily by train to New York City, where she was a buyer for Macy's. In 1984, she moved back to Scottdale to help her husband launch his medical practice, where she was the office manager. Carol would tell you, however, that the best job she ever had was raising her son, Gregory McArdle Williams, born on Aug. 29, 1994. Since that glorious day, Mac has been her true pride and inspiration for being the best mom and teacher she could be. Since returning to Scottdale, she spent the last 39 years wearing many different hats while enjoying multiple professional and club activities. Carol served as treasurer of the Westmoreland/Frick Foundation Board, was a member of the Laurel Highlands YMCA board, and was a past member of the Westmoreland County Foundation board. She was a docent at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, a position she coveted, as she loved to instill her passion for art and art history. She was a member of the Vernon Lay Society for the Verna Montessori School in Mt. Pleasant, and would tell everyone about the benefits of an early education taught by the beautiful sisters at VMS. Carol attended weekly Women's Day Out Bible study classes, where she appreciated the faith-based scholarly teachings and ensuing discussions with all of the members of the Christ's Church. She also loved being a member of the Scottdale Book Club as well as the Boston College Alumni Book Club. Carol is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Carol was a dedicated, faithful wife to husband, Mark, whom she married on Sept. 29, 1979, and a devoted mother to son, Gregory "Mac." She was the perfect big sister to brothers, Michael F. Fagan, Joseph P. Fagan and John P. Fagan. In addition to her three brothers, she is survived by her mother, Concetta Ann, who was her loving teacher and shopping buddy for all of her life. She is also survived by nieces, Stephanie Gresh, Kaitlin Pegg, Emma Fagan, Maureen Fagan and Kerry Fagan; nephews, Sean Fagan, Joseph Fagan and Jack Fagan; cousins, Betty Feely, Donna Qualley and Denise Caldwell; and many more family members and friends. She was predeceased by her protege and loving father, Joseph P. Fagan, who taught her much about life, love, faith, learning and how to carry on a spirited debate without being angry or offensive. Friends and family will be received at a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Scottdale, by Father John Ayoob, to be followed immediately by a luncheon across the street at St. John Elementary School. Carol's memorial service has been entrusted to the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, PA 15683. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Carol in a special way are invited to make gifts to the Fagan Family Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation of Pittsburgh, pittsburghfoundation.org/fundsearchq=fagan%20family%20fund&fbclid=IwAR3j2vF8whs8bHmnUZKTdkMtRb_lL6ZP-fy_ldlNNbF1_yJZQ-KZgnsH0zc.
