George Sweeney Obituary
Dr. George E. Sweeney, D.D.S., 92, of Latrobe, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, in Loyalhanna Care Center, Latrobe. Born March 31, 1915, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late Bernard P. and Rose E. (Makary) Sweeney. He was a lifelong member of St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe. George attended St. Vincent College from 1932-34, transferred with advanced standing to Carnegie Tech, and graduated in 1937 with a B.S. in engineering. He was employed as an engineer by West Penn Power Co. from 1937-1943. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, and was assigned to the Plant Engineering Agency. In 1946, he was discharged from the Signal Corps as a first lieutenant. He returned to St. Vincent College Biology Department, 1946-1947; was accepted at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine, in 1947; and graduated in 1951 with a D.D.S. degree. He started a dental practice in Latrobe in 1951. He taught at the University of Pittsburgh dental school part time from 1951-60. He entered graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh and received an M.Ed. in 1957. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Clara B. (Bridge) Sweeney; a son, Dr. George J. Sweeney, D.M.D.; and a brother, Dr. Paul B. Sweeney, D.D.S. He is survived by four sons, Dr. Gerard D. Sweeney, D.M.D., of Latrobe, Bernard P. Sweeney, M.D. and wife, Pamela, of Genesso, N.Y., Gregory C. Sweeney, M.D. and wife, Kathleen, of Duncansville, and Lawrence C. Sweeney and wife, Marlene, of Latrobe; two daughters, Marianne R. Burkhart, R.Ph, of Johnstown, and Rose M. Niezelski and husband, John "Jack," of Latrobe; a sister, Dr. Marian Bonazza, of Costa Mesa, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Military services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with American Legion Post #515 and VFW Post #3414. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe. Interment in St. Vincent Cemetery.
