Harry Franey Obituary

Harry D. Franey, 70, of Normalville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Life's Promise Nursing Home, Ligonier. He was born on May 22, 1954, in Tucson, AZ, the son of Carmella Gallucci Demoise and the late John Franey. Harry had a zest for life. He graduated from PSU with a journalism degree in 1976. He played piano at the Funny Bone in Pittsburgh for several years and then was employed at Volkswagen in New Stanton. Harry started his adventurous life as a bartender and piano player at Seven Springs. For years he was a staple at the Foggy Goggle Bar. His classical piano style at Helen's restaurant made him a local favorite, and he loved the people he played for; many were great friends for life. Harry was a collector of albums and sheet music, plus everything from the Rolling Stones. His signed memorabilia and photos were shared and supported by his good friend and collector Paul Luster, seeing The Rolling Stones over 70 times in over 15 cities nationwide. Harry sang with Neil Young at the 1997 Hoard festival in Ohio on the "Third Stage." The song was "Too Far Gone." His passion for baseball led him to be a huge Pittsburgh Pirates fan for life. He would attend Pirate openers for 30 years with his friend Scott. He was a season ticket holder in the 80s for 10 years. Harry was known as "Pirate Pete" at PNC Park, and he dressed the part. Steve Blass signed his autobiography to Harry as "To Pirate Pete." Harry loved riding in sports cars with his friend Marshall all over the Laurel Highlands. He enjoyed music jam sessions with his friends P.T. and Chuckie. Harry and his mother, Carmie, loved to garden on the family farm. They hosted and attended many flower and garden events. His love for the outdoors led him to hike all over Ohiopyle in search of waterfalls and adventure. He also loved to ride his bike on the rails to trails in the Laurel Highlands. Harry had a special place in his heart for all the friends he had at Seven Springs, especially the staff and friends at Helen's. Surviving are his mother, Carmella; numerous cousins; and members of the Demoise family. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Franey II; and Thomas Demoise. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at SLATER-REGA FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 730 W. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, where services will be held at 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Flowers and donations made to a charity of choice will be accepted. "I loved my friend. He went away from me. There´s nothing more to say. The poem ends, soft as it began- I loved my friend." RIP Hair Pie.
