Joyce Frey Obituary
Joyce C. (Reynolds) Frey, 90, of Latrobe, died on Aug. 25, 2025, at Westmoreland Hospital. Born May 20, 1935, in Scottdale, she was the daughter of the late Willard Reynolds and Christine (Lydic) Reynolds. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Paul "Gene" Frey; father- and mother-in-law, Paul Frey and Helen (Edge) Frey Clawson; sisters-in-law, Maxine Frey and Carole Frey; brothers-in-law, Henry Frey and Harvey Goldstein; and nephew, Paul Goldstein. She is survived by her daughter, Denise and James Marts of Greensburg; son, Mark and Peggy Frey of Pinedale, WY; sister-in-law, Paula Goldstein of Mt. Lebanon; grandsons, Anthony G. (Mariah) Banks of North Huntingdon and Weston M. (Leah) Banks of Greensburg; granddaughter, Samantha (Chris) Thompson of Latrobe; niece, Stacey (Chris) Carson and their daughters, Alaina and Hattie of Michigan; and great-grandchildren, Asher and Brielle Banks, Gwen and Everett Banks, and Anna Thompson. Mom was a graduate of Ridgeway High School and Indiana State Teachers' College (IUP) in Indiana. While in high school, she participated in numerous choir programs. During her college career, she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority, Student Christian Association, Methodist Club, and Association for Childhood Education. She was also a member of the homecoming court. After graduation, she taught elementary school at Turner Elementary in Wilkinsburg, Washington Elementary in Penn Hills, and West Point and Stanwood Elementary in the Hempfield Area School District. In the 80s, she and Dad purchased a travel agency in Greensburg and a Hallmark store in Mt. Pleasant. They also started Laurel Corporate Properties. At the Hallmark store during the Christmas open house year after year, Dad played Santa. Dad and Mom won a contest through Hallmark, which included a limo ride to the Civic Arena and a chance for Dad to go backstage with the Barnum and Bailey Circus, dress like a clown, and perform with one of the most famous clowns in the world, David Larible. Thirty years ago, Mom and Dad got their first Bernese Mountain Dog. They joined the Three Rivers Bernese Mountain Dog Club. She would master the art of drafting and held many draft workshops throughout the years with club members and their Berners. The group is often seen in the Christmas parade in Greensburg. During a 30-year span, Mom and Dad would have eight Berners, as many as four at a time. Over the years, you would often see her walking two at a time at Twin Lakes. For a few years they would travel to Florida or Georgia for a month in the winter in their motorhome. Yes they took four dogs with them. People would stop them and ask how they traveled with those four large dogs. Mom loved spending time with her grandsons, Tony and Weston. They spent many summers with her and Dad. Mom had some very special friends. Mary and Ed English were lifelong friends that we camped out west with for many years forever friends; Joady and Karen visited weekly with their Berners and her young friend, Emily, and her dog, Admiral; Donna would bring her favorite chicken dish; Joye always sent a unique and useful Christmas gift; her neighbors would stop by with a home-cooked meal or cookies; Sue took her for her cancer check-ups in Pittsburgh; Theresa would stop by when she was at St. Anne's to see her dad. She had many friends from the Bernese Mountain Dog Club that kept in touch with her when she was no longer able to get around. Everyone loved Mom's homemade Pennsylvania Dutch hand-rolled noodles in turkey broth at holidays, along with oatmeal and poorman's cake throughout the year. A special thank you to Marcy, Carlotta, Peggy, and so many others at St. Anne's Nursing Home. She joined their frequent guest program in 2021 and always requested St. Anne's for rehab after her hospital stays. And another special thank you to Jen, Grace, Tammy, Ken, and others with Allegheny Health Network Home Health. Thanks to every kindhearted person with Mutual Aid Ambulance Service and to Lloydsville Fire Department. Arrangements were handled by THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY LTD., Blawnox, PA. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025, at Grace Baptist Church at 4463 Route 136, Greensburg, PA 15601.
