Mary Sagan Obituary
Mary Hvizdos Sagan, 103, formerly of Lawson Heights, Latrobe, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, in Mary's room at Meadow Lakes Retirement Community, East Windsor, NJ, where she lived since 2008. She was born Jan. 6, 1922, in Whitney, a daughter of the late John S. and Mary C. (Barlock) Hvizdos. Mary was an active member of a Catholic church her entire life: St. Cecilia Church, Whitney; St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe; and St. Anthony of Padua, Hightstown, NJ. A devout Catholic, Mary was a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality with St. Cecilia Church, Whitney. Upon marriage she became active with the St. Vincent Rosary Society, Latrobe. She volunteered in the cafeteria while her daughters attended St. Vincent Elementary School, Latrobe. At Meadow Lakes in NJ, Mary was a co-creator of the Rosary group, initiated van service to St. Anthony's for holy days, and became a "pushover" for those wheelchair-bound to attend on-site masses just a few displays of her generous heart. All of which remain active today. Mary worked for her father's store, the General Merchandise Whitney Cash Market, both on-site and delivering orders. Before and after WWII, she was the postmistress at the Whitney Post Office. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward George Sagan, in 2005; a son, Edward Gerard Sagan, in 1961; two stillborn sons; four brothers, infant Joseph, John J., Michael J., and George A. Hvizdos; and three dear sisters, Cecilia (Sis) M. Washnock, Aurelia J. Hvizdos, and Anna R. Hvizdos. She is survived by her three daughters, Jean Sagan Funck and her husband, Steven, of Etters, PA, Janice Sagan Farquhar and her husband, Kevin, of Alexandria, VA, and Mary Jane Sagan of Princeton, NJ; nine grandchildren; four Funck great-granddaughters; and six Farquhar great-grandsons who, along with their families, cherished making memories with their beloved great-grandma throughout their young lives; brother Leonard Hvizdos of Emmaus, PA; sister, Lucille (Richard) Marsh of Latrobe, PA; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Mary's spirit bubbled over with delight having three generations of children present to celebrate her 103 birthday milestone on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, at Meadow Lakes, where numerous directors, staff, and residents popped in, adding to the gaiety. Mary's immediate and extended families, along with a slew of friends and staff at Meadows Lakes, visited until she found eternal rest. Her door was always open. Mary shared her blessings without reservation; her kindness extended far beyond her immediate circle. Mary leaves a strong networked legacy behind in every life she touched. Friends will be received from 5 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, in HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, in St. Vincent Basilica, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650. Everyone please go directly to the church. Service of committal will follow in Mary Mother of Mercy Mausoleum Chapel at St. Vincent Cemetery.
