Merritt F. Allen, 73, of Unity Township, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013. He was born April 3, 1939, in Wheeling, W.Va., a son of the late Merritt G. and Wilda Cunningham Allen. Merritt was the owner/operator of Allen Homes. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and was a rabid West Virginia University sports fan. He was an avid outdoorsman and had been involved with Boy Scouts and NASA's Young Astronauts program. He had golfed in the Monday Night Leftovers league at Valley Green Golf Club. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn "Carol" Albert Allen; three sons, Mark D. (Rhonda) Allen, of Greensburg, Scott D. (Beth) Allen, of New Alexandria, and Christopher P. (Kelly) Allen, of Somerset; seven granddaughters, Megan, Brittany, Leandra, Samantha, Kiersten, Madison and Gretchen; a sister Sally Gruber, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Lota Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
