Michael Hill Obituary

Michael J. "Spike" Hill Jr., 60, of Latrobe, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. Born Aug. 28, 1960, in Latrobe, he was the son of Veronica E. (Yancy) Hill, of New Derry, and the late Michael J. Hill. He had a deep faith in God and was a member of St. Martin Church, New Derry. He was a valued employee proudly serving U.S. manufacturing for more than 40 years, and was currently employed by Technimark, Latrobe, as a metrologist. Spike's passion was music, and as a talented guitarist and singer for more than 40 years, he headed several bands, including the Nightmares, M-16, Oedipus Rex, and Nemesis. Family always came first, and as a dedicated son, he loved singing "Brown Eyed Girl" to his Mom, who held a very special place in his heart. He brought and kept his family and friends together through his gift of music, and was that constant "note" that spoke to all of us, drowning out differences and making us all sing and dance with joy and laughter. His other passion was cars, and he loved working on them. He was a self-taught mechanic who, in addition to cars, could repair and assemble just about anything. He also loved his trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, where he enjoyed playing the slots and attending the shows. He will be lovingly remembered for his great smile and his willingness to always help anyone in need. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his son, Victor McCoy; a brother-in-law, Richard Shaffer Sr.; and two nephews, Thomas Shaffer and Richard Shaffer Jr. Along with his mother, Spike is survived by his life partner, Laurie Fannie, of Latrobe, and daughter, Taylor Stewart (David), of Blairsville; four sisters, Susan V. Campbell (Jeff), of Latrobe, Maria E. Soohey (Mike), of Latrobe, Rosalie J. Bell (Ralph), of Jeannette, and Leah M. Thomas (Mark), of Derry; his nieces and nephews, Lynda Joseph (Roy) and children, Alaina McClarren (Neal) and daughter, Katrina Mitchell (Adam), Sergio Bell, Emilio Bell, Kayla Thomas and children, Krista Thomas (Jimmy), Kassie Thomas and daughter; a great-nephew, Travis Shaffer; and his cat, Kat Kitty. Family and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME LLC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. We respectfully request your adherence to all current medical guidelines, including wearing a face mask and social distancing, as well as your understanding as we maintain occupancy limits at the funeral home. Due to covid-19, the funeral Mass and interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. My Dear Pennsylvania Family and Dearest Aunt Vern all of my family were very saddened to hear of Michael passing. They all loved him and spoke how kind and warm he was and easy to be around. When in Pa. each wanted to catch him at a location with his band performing. When visiting at his Moms house Mike he would go out of his way to come by to say hi and greet me, give a hug and that wonderful smile, always an endearing moment. He and I had a nice time chatting at Rosalie and Ralphs house as he was Emceeing for the Yancy reunion, we talked and shared about our love for music. Now "Spike" you can entertain the Heavens, we'll be listening. Aunt Patty

He was the best cousin a person could ever have in their life. Always willing to lend a helping hand with his gracious smile expecting nothing in return. Never too busy for anyone in need & knew just how to lift your spirits. He was like having a guardian angel among us; always there when we needed him. Sadly, for many of us, we now realize what an exceptional human being he was too and we should all aspire to be more like Michael, Mike & even Spike. The world did change in 2020, but none of us saw this coming and our world will never be the same. Michael, I always knew you wanted to put on a "Really Big Show" like Ed Sullivan, since we were about 6 years old & pretended to be on TV with our very own variety show. I believe you accomplished that with the closing of the curtain of the 2020 Pandemic. A new star was added to the heavens this past New Year's Eve & I'll be watching for your twinkle in the night sky..."Shine on You Crazy Diamond!" You will truly be missed by those of us who were lucky enough to know you in our lifetime! Sending love & heart felt memories all the way from Texas. The Eggers - Janice, Tony, Gretchen and Aric

I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of Mike's passing. I will always remember the good memories of Mike's band, Nemesis and a guaranteed good time when Mike and Laurie would be at BC Kenly's.

Mike was a kind, gentle soul, who I sat next to for many years in the Metrology Lab. Not only did he make work pleasurable with funny stories and rock music, but the job he did in Metrology was always very detailed and thorough. He was well respected for his knowledge and experience and he'll be greatly missed as a colleague and a friend. Rest in peace, my friend.

I am at a still stunned by the news of Spike's passing. Living so far away made it hard to spend time with him, but always enjoyed seeing him when I was in town. My heart goes out to Aunt Vern, Leah, Rosalie, Maria, Susan, Laurie and Taylor. He has left us far too soon. May God comfort you as only he can. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
