Phillip Reilly Obituary

Dr. Phillip J. Reilly Jr, 87, of Ruffsdale, passed away Monday, June 3, 2024, at home. He leaves behind daughters, Susan (Reilly) Cassidy currently of Glen Allen, VA, and her husband Sean, Christine (Reilly) Swope of New Stanton. Six grandchildren; Alexis Savinda of Shaler, Jasper Morton of California, PA, Olivia Cassidy and Victoria Cassidy of Glen Allen, VA, AJ Swope and Riley Swope of New Stanton; siblings, Arlene O'Donnell (Michael) of Penn Hills; Kathleen Castner (Robert Jr.) of Pleasant Hills. In-laws: Bill (Helen) Sullivan of Georgetown, TX, Catherine (Thomas) Schmitt of Allison Park, PA; nieces and nephews; Michael O'Donnell (wife Cindy) of Washington, PA, Kathleen O'Donnell of TN, Renee Tressler, Mark Reilly and Sean Reilly all of Lake Worth, FL,; Bridget Kellermann of West Mifflin, Paul Castner (wife Merci) of Moon Twp., and Robert Castner III (wife Jess) of Forney, TX, Bill Sullivan (Elizabeth) of Austin, TX, Brian Sullivan (Courtney) of Round Rock, TX, Christopher Schmitt (Allison) of Chapel Hill, NC, Matthew Schmitt (Colleen) of Frederick, MD. Philip was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years Rosellen Sullivan; his oldest daughter Ann Overly, brother Donald Reilly of Las Vegas, and his parents Phillip Jerome Reilly Sr. and Helen Haefele of Connellsville. Phillip was born in Pittsburgh on Aug. 16, 1936. He grew up in Connellsville and graduated from Connellsville Area High School in 1954. He attended his beloved University of Notre Dame, where he was a pre-med student. Phillip went to attend the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, graduating from there in 1962. Following college, he proudly served in the Army National Guard. He met the love of life, Rosellen Sullivan, in 1960, while they were both working at Southside Hospital in Pittsburgh. Rosellen was working as a labor and delivery nurse and Phillip was completing his residency. The couple married in 1963, raised their family in Ruffsdale, and set up his medical practice in Smithton. Early in his career, Dr. Reilly served as the school physician for the Belle Vernon Area School District and occasionally assisted schools in neighboring districts when needed. Throughout his more than 50 years practicing medicine, Dr. Reilly was affiliated with several hospital systems including Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital, Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital and most notably Independence Health Frick Hospital, where he also served two terms as President of the Board. Dr. Reilly received numerous professional honors and awards during his five decades of service including a nationally-recognized Five Star Patient excellence award from U.S. News Magazine. As a physician, he was most known not only for his commitment to medical excellence, but for his unwavering compassion for every patient he's ever served. Doctor Reilly was a dedicated family man, who took pride in supporting his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in all things academic and sports. As an avid sports fan, he certainly loved the Steelers and Panthers; but nothing superseded the pride of his alma mater. He especially enjoyed the annual outing to South Bend, to take pride in a football weekend with the family. We thank you. We love you. Rest in Peace now. Go Irish! A Catholic memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 10, 2024 at Saint John the Baptist/Saint Joseph Church at 416 South Broadway Ave. in Scottdale. In lieu of flowers, please instead honor the life of Dr. Reilly with a donation to any of the following deserving organizations: American Cancer Society, National Council of Youth Sports, or The Special Olympics.

Dr. Reilly was a neighbor of ours. I used to babysit Ann and and Susan when they were young kids. I was a teenager. My sister Dana was good friends with Ann. When Dana would dissappear on occasion, we would look for her there just right across a field! Rose Ellen was a great person. Loved the whole family. Remember going there to Dr. Office for everything. My husband went there for his CDL physicals. Best days in late 1970's babysitting for them was great!. Thank you Dr. REILLY for all of your caring.

My deepest condolences to the families. I remember all the summers when Dr. Reilly and his wife would pick up Alex & Andy Bogley at Franks house to take the boys to the Notre Dame game. Also the times I was at the office for a visit. He always knew what the problem was, without sending you to different specialists. Deeply missed. RIP Amen

RIP, Dr Reilly. I always enjoyed working with you, at Frick. And with you and your patients when I worked with Amedisys. Your patients loved you, as they should. Your care, and concerns for patients in your care impressed me, and made me the nurse I was. God bless you, and your family.

Our deepest sympathy to the entire family. Doc was truly a special man. My grandmother, Anne Odelli was one of his first patients and she loved him dearly, as we all did. I always remember him blushing when she would tell him that he was so handsome. Doc always took exceptional care of all of us, especially my dad, Darryl, who loved jarring with him about the Steelers and Browns and Pitt and Notre Dame! I still attribute my Dad´s long life to Doc´s exceptional care of him. God broke the mold when He made Doc. Love to the family. May eternal be his memory.
