Robert Rumbaugh Obituary

Robert L. Rumbaugh Jr. was born Nov. 30, 1933, to his late parents, Robert L. Rumbaugh Sr. and Nell Rumbaugh (Fallon). He passed away Monday, May 15, 2023, after several years in long-term care. Robert was predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia Rumbaugh (Patterson) (April 2012); his brother, John "Josh" Rumbaugh (October 2006); and his son, Matthew Rumbaugh (May 2016). Robert is survived by his other three sons, Robert L. Rumbaugh III, his wife, Julie and two daughters, Chelsea and Annie, Christopher Rumbaugh, his wife, Jennifer and their two children, Chris Jr. and Samantha, and Sean Rumbaugh, his wife, Krista and their daughter, Jaclyn. He was also a grandfather to Matthew's children, Fletcher, Darcy and Alexandra; and a great-grandfather to Maddie. Robert proudly served as a member of the Army as a medic during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955. He graduated from Ohio Northern University in August of 1958 with a degree in pharmacy. Robert began his career as a pharmacist in Detroit, Mich., from 1958 to 1965, before moving back to Mt. Pleasant, where he became an integral member of the local healthcare community as a third-generation pharmacist until his retirement in 1985. During his time on this earth, Robert pursued many personal interests, including earning a pilot's license, fishing, golf, doting on his wife, Patty, and occasionally, playing blackjack at casinos all over the country. He and Patty were able to travel extensively during their retirement years. Many of his favorite stories surrounded their experiences and adventures as they explored the United States in his prized Cadillac, adorned with his personalized license plate (EZ MONEY). Anyone who ever met him knew how much he cherished the time he and our mom were able to share together during their travel exploits. Robert grew up as a Mt. Pleasant boy who was raised by both his parents and his grandma, Bea, grandfather, Papap, and uncles, Ab and Dolph. He always spoke fondly of his times as a young boy at the Rumbaugh farm, as well as his teenage years in Hazel Park, Mich. He was an honor student with a propensity for math and science. He played high school football, and jokingly nicknamed himself "The Hazel Park Flash." Our father had a fantastic and self-deprecating sense of humor that he passed on to all of his children, grandchildren, and we suspect future generations as well. Robert was a "W.C. Fields" man. So we are sure he would grin at this quote from the legendary comedian. '"It's a funny old world. A man's lucky if he gets out alive." We will all miss you, dad. Per his wishes, there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to the Mt. Pleasant American Legion.
