Officer Stephen James Mayhle, 29, of Pittsburgh, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, while acting in the line of duty as a police officer for the City of Pittsburgh. The son of Ronald Robert and Marjorie Robertson Mayhle, he was born April 3, 1980, in Indiana, Pa. Stephen attended Indiana Wesleyan School and was a 2002 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in criminology. Prior to moving to Pittsburgh, Stephen was a resident of Knoxville, Tenn., where he and his wife owned and operated a landscaping business. He was a member of Sarver Wesleyan Methodist Church. In his spare time, Stephen enjoyed golfing and baseball and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Mr. Mayhle has served as a police officer for the City of Pittsburgh for approximately two years and was a member of Pittsburgh Fraternal Order of Police. He was a man who loved his job and will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, son and son-in-law. Surviving is his wife, Shandra Lynn Wallace Mayhle, whom he wed Nov. 18, 2000; two daughters, Jennifer and Brooklynn; parents, Ronald and Marjorie Mayhle, of Indiana; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Kathy Wallace, of Marion Center; two brothers, Jeffrey Mayhle, of Indiana, and Jamie Mayhle, of Salem, Ohio, and his fiance, Lynne Nevseta, of Johnstown; paternal grandparents, the Rev. Ronald R. and Ruth Mayhle, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and maternal grandparents, Paul and Dolores Robertson, of Indiana; Shandra's maternal grandparents, the Rev. William and Phyllis Blair, of Indiana; and paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Georgena Wallace, of Marion Center; Shandra's maternal great-grandmother, Erma Blair, of Indiana; four nieces and nephews, Kenton, Vincent, Kendra and Alyssa Gurnee, of Albion; sister-in-law Julia Wallace Gurnee and her husband, Byron, of Albion. Formal viewing will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at the City County Building located in Pittsburgh, with funeral service to be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Petersen Event Center, Pittsburgh. Locally, friends will be received from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, April 10, at JOHN A. LEFDAHL FUNERAL HOME, Indiana, Pa. A private funeral service for the family only will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the LEFDAHL CHAPEL with the Rev. Daniel Mayhle officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Indiana, which will be open to the general public.
