Stephen Slater Obituary

Stephen Charles Slater, 69, of Ruffsdale, passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his family. He suffered from Alzheimer's for the past five years. Steve was born Dec. 16, 1952, in Ithaca, N.Y., a son of the late Reverend Paul Slater and Helen (Smith) Slater. He married Sandi (Suter) Slater on July 8, 1972. Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was the ultimate protector of his family and will be missed by his many longtime friends whom he maintained over the years. Steve was employed as a quality inspector with General Nuclear Corp. for 34 years and previously worked at Walworth Valve Co. In his early years, he loved playing softball. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren, enjoyed being outdoors, golfing and listening to classic Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin songs! Steve will be sadly missed by the love of his life and soulmate, his wife of nearly 50 years, Sandi (Suter) Slater; his son, Stephen Slater and wife, Rebecca; his daughter, Shannon Duke and husband, Michael; his grandchildren, Matthew Slater (Abby), Ashley Slater, Kohl Aumer and Kurt Aumer; his "soon to be born" great-grandson, Eli Richard Slater; his siblings, Nancy Peterson (Bill), Paulette Pellet (Mike), Paul Slater (Jeanne), Mike Slater (Carol), Ron Slater (Wendy), Dan Slater (Lori), Diane Kraff (Richard) and Laurie Lester (Chuck); and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill and Peter Slater; and sisters, Darlene and Melody Slater. Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 SPRING ST., Scottdale, (www.fergusonfunerals.com). Family and friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Monday with Pastor Nordby and Deacon Kunkle officiating. Graveside committal service and interment will be in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Tarrs. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation at 1-800-272-3900. Love Lasts Forever!

" Stevie" was the first friend i can ever remember having, age 3 or so. We were next door neighbors. Our ages were the same and often we were at each others homes. I can recall many memories of playing together and our school days, and i recall a kind gentle spirit in him, that I´m sure stayed with him, evident even back then.
The world needs more people like Steve, people who genuinely cared about others and would always help when it was needed. That was part of who he was. He will be very much missed but the day of a glad reunion will come, as it will for all who believe.
