Steve E. Sphon

1930 - 2025

Steve E. "Bud" Sphon, 94, of Bovard, died Friday, July 4, 2025, at Hempfield Manor, Greensburg. He was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Bovard, a son of the late Elmer and Anna Sphon. Prior to retirement, he was employed for over 30 years at ITE/Brown Boveri in South Greensburg. He was a member of the former St. Bede Church, Bovard, and a member of the Bovard Firemen's Club. Steve enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, walking, and gardening. He also enjoyed playing baseball, golfing, and bowling, as well as watching and attending baseball and football games. Steve was well-read and known for his quick wit and humorous one-liners. He attended Bovard grade school and was a graduate of Greensburg High School in 1948. Steve was a Navy veteran. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John "Ike" Sphon, in 2021, and his nephew, Thomas Sphon, in 2015. He is survived by his brother, Richard Sphon, and wife, Judy, of Painted Post, NY; nephews, John Sphon and wife, Donna, of Greensburg, and James Sphon of Bovard; and nieces, Ann Nicholson of Painted Post, NY, Susan Hoobler and husband, Ray, of Horseheads, NY, and Jennifer Corbey and husband, Brian, of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by seven great-nephews, Taylor Sphon and wife Kait, Nate Sphon, Lucas Sphon and wife Maggie, Matt Hoobler and wife Bethany, Jake Hoobler and wife Kelsey, Quinn Nicholson, and R.J. Corbey; three great-nieces, Abby Joensen and husband Nick, Ana Jo Nicholson, and CeCe Corbey; and five great-great-nephews and nieces, Axel, Maverick, and Miller Joensen, and Ellie and Annie Sphon.
