William Kvaternik Obituary
William "Bill" Kvaternik, of Paxtang, died quietly Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at his home with his wife, Darlene, by his side. Bill was the owner and operator of Hunters Valley Winery, Liverpool, Pa. Bill was originally from Trafford and moved to the Harrisburg area in 1969, where he worked as an urban planner for the Commonwealth for 33 years in the Office of State Planning, Department of Community Affairs Flood Recovery Team. He retired from the Pennsylvania Housing and Finance Agency. He had been educated at Penn State University in landscape architecture and Manchester University, England, in town and country planning. Bill and Darlene founded Hunters Valley Winery in 1986 and the winery continues to operate. Bill grew a number of grape varieties, produced award-winning wines and enjoyed caring for the outstanding landscape overlooking the Susquehanna River. Bill was a past board president of Perry County Council of the Arts and a member of the Liverpool Lions Club, through which he formed many valued and lasting friendships. Bill enjoyed watching birds at the Delaware Seashore and reading and discussing ideas and politics with his many friends. A son of Ann and Kazimir Kvaternik, both deceased, Bill and Darlene were pleased to have a quasi-parental relationship with Mary Smith Hunt and her husband, Wally, of Colonial Park. Bill cherished a close relationship with his sister-in-law, Judith, of Pittsburgh, widow of Raymond Etchison; his niece, Elaine (David) Chir; his nephew, Larry (Jennifer) Etchison; and his great-nieces and nephew, Sarah Chir (Jason) Starr, Marie Chir, Rachel Chir and Gunnar Etchison. He has surviving uncles, John (Ann) and Joe (Mary) Baric, of Trafford; aunt, Helen Lane, of Long Island, N.Y.; and many surviving cousins. Friends are invited to attend a visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at ZIMMERMAN-AUER FUNERAL HOME, 4100 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Bill knew he was loved and he will be sorely missed by many. Friends and acquaintances are invited also to a celebration of Bill's life to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Hunters Valley Winery, 3 Orchard Road, Liverpool. Burial will be at the family's convenience at Hunters Valley Cemetary, Liverpool, among the graves of good friends. Arrangements by AUER CREMATION SERVICES OF PENNSYLVANIA INC.
