Jacob J. Baker

Jacob James Baker, 22, of Thurmont, MD, died on May 23, 2024. Jake was born on January 11, 2002, in Rockville, MD, to James E. and Karen (Smits) Baker. He attended school and played football at Slippery Rock University for one year, Towson University for one year, and Clarion University for two years. While playing at Slippery Rock, Jake was a defensive end and helped The Rock to the 2023 PSAC West title and a trip to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals. During his time at Slippery Rock, he earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete honors as a marketing major. Prior to college, Jake attended Catoctin High School, where he wrestled and won a state championship in football. He also enjoyed drawing, artwork, kayaking, fishing, working on his truck, Nerf guns, and building Lego kits. Jake is survived by his parents, Jim and Karen; and sister, Alyssa M. Baker, all of Thurmont, MD; paternal grandmother, Patricia L. Baker of Saltsburg; maternal grandparents James H. and Mary Smits of Falls Church, VA; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and teammates. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James E. Baker Sr. Friends will be received Friday, May 31 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at BASH-NIED-JOBE FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont, PA, (724-468-8381). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1 at St. Vincent Basilica, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650. Everyone is asked to go directly to the basilica. A celebration of Jake's life is being planned for a later date in Thurmont.
