Lawrence Melego Obituary

Lawrence P. Melego, 83, of Mt. Pleasant, died on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, in Independence Health System Latrobe Hospital. He was born on June 11, 1942, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Albert and Anna Pauline Blasko Melego. Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving active duty from 1960 to 1964 and reserve duty for two years. He was a retired steelworker, having been employed at the U.S. Steel Edgar Thompson Works. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union, the Mount Pleasant Polish Falcons Club, and the Hecla Sportsmen Club. He loved to hunt, fish, and garden, and he greatly loved polka music. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Visitation Roman Catholic Church. Larry was very proud of his Slovak heritage and did much research and genealogy over the years. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Zavatsky Melego; his children, Jennifer Golkosky and her husband, Richard, of Nokesville, VA; Larry Melego of Marienville; and Scott Melego and his wife, Kerry, of Chambersburg; his loving grandchildren, Kylie Vanorsdale and her husband, Braden, Jacob Melego and his fiance, Julia, Emmie Golkosky, Benjamin Melego, and Logan Melego; and his special friends, Wally and Gretchen Szelong. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Eugene, Albert, and Regis Melego; and his father- and mother-in-law, Edward and Emily Zavatsky. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025, in BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 406 E. Washington St., Mt. Pleasant, where a Blessing Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025, in the Visitation R.C. Church with Rev. Thomas Avila as celebrant. Military honors will be accorded by the Mount Pleasant American Legion Honor Guard. Larry cherished his wife and family above all else. His final words, "I love you more," perfectly expressed that love that defined his life. To offer a condolence or remembrance, please visit www.brooksfuneralhomes.com.

Eleanor: I'm so sorry to hear of Larry's passing. I recall the discussion he and I had on genealogy and accidentally meeting the two of you some years ago on Main Street. God rest his soul.
