Robert Sproull Obituary

Robert J. Sproull, 80, of Vandergrift, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in his residence. Born Oct. 13, 1932, in Leechburg, a son of the late William G. and Sarah Irene (Stivason) Sproull, he was a 1953 graduate of Vandergrift High School. Robert was a Korean War veteran, having served with the Army, and formerly employed for 32 and 1/2 years by the Kiski Area School District as a custodian, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Vandergrift VFD No. 2 for 50 years, where he served as an ambulance driver for 18 years, and member of the Westmoreland and Armstrong County, Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania firemen's associations. He was also a member of the High Hatters of Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association, member and past president of the Old Timers' Firemen's Association, past president and treasurer of Apollo Hose Company No. 3 and volunteered his services at the Vandergrift and Apollo fire halls. Mr. Sproull enjoyed going to races at Lernerville and especially enjoyed being with his great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Lydia (Cramer) Hepler Sproull; two brothers, William Harry Sproull and Charles Calvin Sproull; and sister, Betty Irene Sproull. Robert is survived by his brothers; James Daniel (Grace) Sproull and John Edward Sproull, both of Vandergrift; sister, Susanne Ruth Sproull, of Manor Township; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends will be welcomed by his family 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the CLAWSON FUNERAL and CREMATION CENTER INC., 170 Main St., Leechburg (724-842-1051), where his funeral ceremonies will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Sara J. Wrona, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Vandergrift, presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Gilpin Township, with full military honors presented by Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard.
