BETTY COLE Obituary

Betty Jane Cole 1920 - 2016 Betty Jane "BJ" Cole beloved mother, grandmother, and proud lifelong Seattleite passed away on September 7, 2016, at the age of 96. Born on January 5, 1920 as the only child of Robert H. and Elizabeth Hughes, BJ grew up in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood and was a graduate of Garfield High School. Pledging Alpha Gamma Delta, BJ went on to graduate from the University of Washington with a degree in History. BJ worked for Boeing during World War II and, in 1942, married college sweetheart Stephen A. Cole (d. 1990). The couple settled in northeast Seattle, where they raised two daughters and were active members of Sand Point United Methodist Church and View Ridge Swim and Tennis Club. BJ and Steve traveled extensively over the years, visiting Europe on UW alumni trips, regularly vacationing on Maui with a close-knit group of treasured friends, and making the pilgrimage to Campbell's Resort on Lake Chelan each and every summer with an extended group of family and friends. In 1987, BJ and Steve moved to the Horizon House on First Hill. A member of the Women's University Club and Garfield Golden Grads, BJ was also a loyal supporter of the Girl Scouts of Western Washington and served as secretary for the Seattle Art Museum's Richard Fuller Guild for many years. A woman of quiet strength known for her generosity, poise and unfailingly polite demeanor, BJ is survived by daughters Wendy Sue Hickman (John) of Tacoma and Amy Lee Cole of Seattle, along with two grandsons, Matthew Hickman of Brooklyn, New York, and Jeffrey Hickman of Los Angeles. A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at 3 p.m. at the Horizon House (900 University Street, Seattle parking garage on University at 9th). The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any philanthropic gestures be made in BJ's memory to Seattle's Union Gospel Mission or the Horizon House Employee Education Fund (Horizon House, Attn: Philanthropy Office, 900 University St., Seattle, WA 98101). The family also wishes to extend their utmost gratitude to the entire Supported Living staff at the Horizon House.
